New Overwatch Control Map: Samoa

Publish Date: October 1, 2023

At the Grand Finals, the New control map was introduced. Samoa is the next control map joining the Overwatch map pool. Samoa is a topical island paradise that also has a point that is within a volcano. Each three of the control points were given to three different principle designers. This makes each point unique and have a different feel from other maps. Aaron Keller the Overwatch 2 Game Director and Jared Neuss the Overwatch 2 Executive Producer came to the grand finals to talk about the new map.

The three different points also have distinct play styles. With the three different designers each point has their own personality and playstyle that is joined together with the common theme of the Samoa culture.

Beach

This point has an easily followed route to get to the capture point. The path funnels down to the peach area where the point is sunk down. This allows for different levels for gameplay. The vertical nature of the point will give way to many interesting compositions that could do well.

Modernizes what beach initially showed off. This incorporates the tradition of the region and brings it into the future. This point is made up of city streets similar to Numbani, but the point is more reminiscent of City Center of Oasis with a large clock tower in the middle of the point. It looks as if it would be good to stall the point as it has a circular slow to the point.

Volcano

This point is a Lucio heaven. This point is surrounded by lava giving opportunity for many environmental kills. There is a drop down in this point like in Oasis Library, but Volcano has a jump pad at the bottom. Of all the point this one has the most direct path to confrontation. This also means that it is a more open point than some of the others. The lore of this point is that this was an eco point of Overwatch, where they were researching geo thermal energy.

There was particular detail given to the culture and heritage of Samoa. This is seen in the research that has been done for the different patterns and houses that are seen in map. As per usual, the map designers dropped in a few easter eggs for the fans to hunt for. Once such easter egg is on Volcano there is a reference to another Blizzard game of Warcraft near the lava. On the beach point the basketballs in spawn are replaced by coconuts for the players to try and make baskets with before the game starts.

Samoa

There are tons of things for fans to explore on the new control map Samoa. No doubt players will have fun looking at how best to utilize the different maps and which heroes work best. Look forward to play Samoa in the upcoming future!
