Afreeca Freecs Announce Their 2022 LCK Roster

Afreeca Freecs have announced their 2022 LCK Roster. This comes after letting go of Bae “Bang” Jun-sik, Song “Fly” Yong-jun, Son “Lehends” Si-woo and Lee “Dread” Jin-hyeok. Their new roster consists of Park “Teddy” Jin-seong, Ryu “Hoit” Ho-seong, Choi “Ellim” El-lim, Yoo “Fate” Su-hyeok and Kim “Kiin” Gi-in. The announcement came in the tweet below.

What Does This Mean for Afreeca Freecs 2022 Season?

This roster is quite the large change from the 2021 Afreeca Freecs roster. Afreeca in 2021 wasn’t all too great. From a 7th place Spring to a 6th place Summer, Afreeca failed to live up to expectations. This roster indictates a whole new direction for the team. This new direction came at the cost of two gerat players, Lehends and Dread. These two along with Kiin were why Afreeca was even somewhat competitive all year round. Lehends especially is one of the better supports in the entire world. Losing these two makes quite a large hole to fill.

The new roster is capable of filling that, albeit with some reservations. Teddy is the biggest name of the new signings and is a great pickup. After Bang failed to live up to expectations in the Spring, Leo took over in the Summer. While Leo is fine, and still on the roster, Teddy is certainly better. Hoit is the bigger question in the Bot Lane. Some may remember him from his Damwon days, but he hasn’t been a starter since March of 2020. Both Teddy and Hoit were on T1 this year as subs and it’s entirely possible that they have experience together.

Ellim is another former T1 player that Afreeca signed. He split time with Oner in the jungle before T1 decided to bench him. Ellim is perfectly fine, but feels like a downgrade from Dread on paper. Finally, there is Fate. Fate, after being rumored for TSM, decided to leave Liiv Sandbox and join Afreeca. Fate is replacing Fly, who was certainly an odd mid laner with picks like Sett and Lisandra. The more “traditional” style of Fate seems like a solid upgrade.

All in all, time will tell how the Afreeca Roster does. There are some big questions to be answered, but this team has potential. The question is, will Afreeca pull an Afreeca and choke.
