There have been 19 different iterations of Call of Duty since the initial release. The current game is Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. Yes, the second game with an almost identical name. There are rumors that Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 will be the next game coming out later in 2023 as well.
What has been interesting is seeing how Call of Duty has made changes to different periods when the games are set. As stated originally, these games were based around World War II. They have also gone to the 1960s for Vietnam and the Cold War, more modern games and even some in the future. Regardless of what era the games have been in, they have brought fun gunplay along with great multiplayer.
When answering this question, fans and players have to go all the way back to October 29, 2003 for the first Call of Duty. The first major Call of Duty game was Modern Warfare which was the fourth installment of the series. This one came out in 2007 and since then there has been a new Call of Duty game in the franchise nearly every year.
