As the Call of Duty: Cold War season comes to a close, Call of Duty’s second division is beginning to heat up as the Call of Duty League announced the Call of Duty Challengers Championship preview and format to see what is to come from it.
The Call of Duty Challengers division is what the National Basketball Association (NBA) G-League is to the NBA. It is a division of amateur and pro-amateur players that want to play at a competitive level of Call of Duty.
The majority of the players are former pros themselves that are trying to get the better form in order to get picked back up by a professional team. Other players in the division are looking to try and make it in the league such as players like Paul “Paulehx” Avila who got picked up by the London Royal Ravens due to his play in the Challengers division.
The Challengers Championship format from the previous season had the best 32 teams play up against each other for their separate regions based on pro points. This, consequently, was not a good format as said by many professionals.
Many professionals in the Challengers division stated that the format was not fair for many of the players that are trying to get the attention that normally does not get attention. It was also highly criticized due to the casters and the low view count as well. This, in turn, is what the Call of Duty League based upon the new format that they came up with.
The Challengers format now also has the top 24 teams from the last Open Bracket tournament qualify for the European and North American Challengers finals. It has the top 16 teams from the open tournament in the Asian Pacific region.
One thing that is new, however, is the 8 teams that can qualify for the finals by the Last Chance Qualifier right before the Challengers Championship. This gives a lot of casual players a chance to play against professional players.
At the beginning of the season, WestR was the favorite in winning all of the tournaments. However, after a recent acquisition of Tyler Felo, Team Canada is looking to be the favorites to win the North American Challengers Finals.
The favorites for the European finals is Team Elevate as they are coming off of six top-four finishes with players such as Weeman and Denza. This is the case while in the Asian region, Renegades and Vertex are both powerhouses in the region that are favorites as well for that region respectively.
One thing that is to come for the Challengers division. It could be crazy when it comes to the format whether it be adding more teams or widening the format to where all the regions are into one tournament. What is to come when it comes to the Challengers Division finals and championship. This could be the end of amateur players or the start of something new.
