Is Call of Duty Esports in Jeopardy?

Publish Date: September 3, 2023

The Call of Duty Esports scene is currently in Jeopardy. This is due to the fact that there are currently two teams that might not be in the CDL next season. The Call of Duty community is wondering whether or not the esports division is in jeopardy due to the ongoing financial struggles the teams are going through.

The Kroenke Esports Situation

Currently, the Guard, the owners of the Los Angeles Guerillas are looking to get out of not only Call of Duty esports, but esports in its entirety, at all costs. There is a big chance that LAG might not be a thing next season.

At the start of February of this year, they decided to scale back their esports operations as all of their teams went back to having Skelton crews run their esports. This is due to the increase of instability in the Overwatch and Call of Duty leagues.

The team is looking for a buyer as we speak and are looking to see whether or not they can survive enough until that happens. Their Call of Duty team is yet to be announced if announced at all.

The REKT Global x KOI Situation

The parent company to the London Royal Ravens of the CDL, is also facing financial struggles. The future seems uncertain. They recently had to spend over 3 million euros, out of pocket, in order to stabilize their player salaries.

This was shortly after London and Rogue Esports was bought out by the esports organization. As Jacob Hale of Dexerto reports, it seems as though the problem goes all the way up to the top.

Possibility of an 11 or 10-team League

There is a huge possibility that the CDL is in jeopardy as it has been hard for many organizations. Teams including OpTic and Thieves. There will be changes in the coming months as the Microsoft buyout may have an influence on the future. Nobody knows what is coming to Call of Duty esports.
