5 Takeaways from CDL Minnesota Launch

Publish Date: February 1, 2020

The Minnesota Launch Weekend has come and gone but not without a few hiccups. Here are 5 takeaways from the CDL Minnesota Launch weekend.

1. Simp’s MVP performance and the Atlanta Faze dominance

Chris “Simp” Lehr, after winning the 2019 Call of Duty World Championship, is back and better than ever. He averaged a 1.58 K/DR with a 40 kill average in Hardpoint and 6.50 KD/R in Search.

Going into Minnesota, there were mentions that Faze lacked an in game leader. After their dominant performance however, that is no longer a cause for concern for this all-star squad.

The Atlanta Faze didn’t drop a single Hardpoint or round of Search and Destroy this weekend. The team was clicking on all cylinders and every player stepped up. They took down the Dallas Empire with an easy 3-0 and the New York Subliners 3-1. The only map they dropped was in domination.

If the first event is any indication of future performance, Simp and the Atlanta Faze will be on track to win the first ever CDL World Championship.

2. CDL Competitive Integrity in Question

Patrick “Aches” Price went on a Twitter rant about the poor competitive integrity of the CDL. After reviewing the 2020 schedule with multiple league teams, Aches went on to say that the Atlanta Faze and the Chicago Huntsmen, two of the biggest teams in the league, would not have to face each other at any of the 8/12 tournaments. He also speculated that it was to ensure both teams made it to Championship Sunday for the best viewership.

The CDL has since corrected their mistake however and the pools have been updated to accurately reflect the matches going forward.

3. The Paris Legion Defy Expectations

The Paris Legion defied all expectations and pre-season power rankings after they went 2-0 for the weekend. With a close 3-2 win over the Optic Gaming LA, the Paris Legion followed up with a quick 3-0 sweep against their main rivals, the London Royal Ravens.

4. The Dallas Empire crumble under pressure

Dallas went 0-2 for the weekend against the Atlanta Faze and the Chicago Huntsmen. While they were able to take a map off of the Chicago Huntsmen, the Empire fell short this weekend with a 1-6 map count.

It was expected to be a close match between both opponents, but with poor performances from everyone on Dallas, they didn’t stand a chance against Atlanta’s Search abilities or Chicago’s slaying power.

5. LA Guerrillas Forfeit a Map

What should have been a 2-0 map lead against Minnesota resulted in a 3-1 loss after it was discovered post map that a player was using a restricted perk.

The LA Guerrillas took full responsibility but pointed out that this wasn’t the first time it had happened. Going forward, they ask that the CDL upholds rules fairly and openly communicates with them if a similar incident occurs.
