A Watchpoint special slated to debut on Thursday night was briefly posted to the Overwatch League website early, including confirmation of the long-speculated 2-2-2 role lock being implemented for Stage 4. It also confirmed longstanding rumors that this role lock would go into effect in Overwatch Competitive Mode as well.
Jon Spector, the League’s Senior Director of Partnerships and Competition, was on the show to confirm the change. Teams have known about the incoming change since June, and Spector said the Stage 4 launch was intended to give players and teams time to adjust to the new system before season playoffs.
He also gave one reason for the change as keeping the OWL experience similar to the at-home play experience, confirming the role lock for competitive online play as well.
Spector acknowledged that the lock may limit some flexibility and creativity in compositions, but that this would be balanced by pro players knowing reliably what they would be expected to play. He also said that the final decision came down to a vote from the League’s teams, who overwhelmingly supported it.
The video was removed from the Overwatch League site shortly after 9:30 PM PST on Wednesday. Stay tuned to The Game Haus for more information on these changes and other breaking Overwatch League news.
