Two men on mopeds attacked Arsenal stars Mesut Ozil and Sead Kolasinac in north London on Thursday, July 25.
The thieves were wielding knives to highjack Ozil’s black Mercedes G-Class 4×4. They attempted to break into the driver’s side by smashing the window with stones and a brick.
The thieves had demanded that Ozil turn his watch over and then attempted to take the car. However, Ozil was getting back into the car, which led to the men trying to attack him.
Kolasinac then stepped in to fight them off, which was momentarily successful.
Ozil proceeded to drive with Kolasinac for around 15 minutes while the thieves chased them.
Both men got out of the car, leaving the doors open and frantically running into the nearby Turkish restaurant, Likya. The staff went up to the window and door ready to help.
The men then decided to flee after that.
The police were on the scene later taking in the accounts of what happened.
Ozil “looked absolutely terrified,” a witness said. He appeared to be “running for his life.”
Another witness, Azuka Alintah, was concerned for Ozil after looking at the thieves. He said the men were wearing all black and never took off their helmets, which was “really creepy.”
“God knows what would have happened if they’d caught him. It looked to me like he’d have been hacked to shreds and he clearly thought so too,” Alintah recounted.
Gunner fans have also had something to say about the incident.
A video released in February was dug up by fans. In the “Teammates Special” for Arsenal Nation Live, both Ozil and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang claimed they would want Kolasinac to back them up in a fight. A Reddit user stated that “They knew.”
Both players stated they are “fine” and that this will not affect their preseason training.
London police have also stated that “there have been no arrests. [But] inquiries continue.”
