Liverpool Beats Chelsea 2(5)-2(4)

Game Recap

A close game led to penalty kicks between Liverpool FC and Chelsea.

In the 15th minute, Liverpool made their first statement of the game. Mohamed Salah was passed the ball from half. He made a run on the right side of the pitch with a flat Chelsea defense. Then, he took a shot on goal after dribbling down to the six. Chelsea keeper, Kepa Arrizabalaga, dove and made the save.

In the 21st minute, Pedro Rodriguez Ledesma made a wall pass play. He ran into the box to bring the ball to the left side of the six. Then Liverpool keeper, Adrian San Miguel del Castillo, deflected the shot upwards. The ball was deflected out after hitting the crossbar.

Christian Pulisic got the ball in the 35th minute of the game. He dribbled from the center of the pitch to the right. Drawing in seven defenders, Pulisic still made a through pass to Olivier Giroud. At the top left corner of the six, Giroud did a low laying ball into the bottom right corner that made the game 1-0 for Chelsea.

In the 48th minute, Liverpool got a goal to tie up the game. Roberto Firmino crashed on the goal with Sadio Mane. Firmino volleyed the ball in between the Chelsea keeper and a defender to Mane. Arrizabalaga made the dive and got contact on the ball, but was not able to stop it. Mane then finished the play by scoring.

Liverpool got two close chances on goal in the 73rd minute of the game. From a corner, the ball settled in the center of the box, then went to the top of the 18 where Salah stood ready. Taking no time at all, Salah took a low left-footed shot on goal. Arrizabalaga and Tammy Abraham both dove to save the goal. With the deflected ball Liverpool tried again to score. However, Arrizabalaga made another dive and sent the ball to the post for Abraham to clear.

Overtime

Going into extra time, Liverpool made an early statement. Mane made a pass to Firmino who took the ball to the bottom of the 18 before sending it back to Mane. He shot and got the ball on the bottom of the crossbar, sending it into the goal.

In the 98th minute, Liverpool’s Castillo got a penalty for challenging the ball. Just outside of the six he made contact with Abraham, which sent him down. This gave Jorge Luiz Frello Filho (Jorginho) the chance to tie up the game with a penalty shot. He sent the ball towards the bottom right and gets it in to tie the game 2-2.

Penalty Recap

Roberto Firmino was the first to line up for Liverpool. He took a shot into the bottom left corner. Arrizabalaga made the right decision to dive that way but didn’t stop the goal.

Jorginho was the first to line up for Chelsea. He got the ball in to tie up the score.

Fabio Henrique (Fabinho) got the next penalty for Liverpool.

Ross Barkley and Mason Mount both got goals for Chelsea, while Divock Okoth Origi and Trent Alexander-Arnold both got goals for Liverpool.

Emerson Palmieri dos Santos was the next to shoot for Chelsea. He sent it into the bottom center of the goal and tied up the score.

Salah lined up and made the same shot as Santos, which went in.

Abraham attempted to make the same move but was blocked.

The game ended with Liverpool winning 2(5)-2(4) against Chelsea for the UEFA Super Cup.
