Chelsea looks toward finding a new manager after the 2019 season.
The club wants to replace current manager, Maurizio Sarri. They ended in third for English Premier League this year. They also look toward playing Arsenal for the UEFA European League on Wednesday, May 29.
Even if Chelsea wins European League, the club will still want to replace Sarri due to the controversy he brings to their fan base.
Juventus has made it clear that they would like Sarri to replace their current manager Max Allegri. There is also some rumors of Allegri possibly moving into Sarri’s position at Chelsea.
But, there is major talk about two bigger competitors that Allegri would have to face off with.
Emma Hayes is a good contender for the position for what she has done for the Chelsea women’s team in the last three years. She placed the team in third for their league this season. Hayes is already closely affiliated with the club since she manages the women’s team. She also has extensive knowledge of how Chelsea likes to play the game.
There is a problem of moving from women’s to men’s soccer. Men soccer is played at a faster pace. The fouls that are called, along with fouls being more dramatized is drastically different. Hayes would have to adjust to the new style of play if chosen.
She stated that she would make the move to coach for the men’s team. She would become the first female manager in EPL if she gets the job. This would be good for Chelsea to set new standards.
The other contestant for the position is former Chelsea player Frank Lampard. He currently coaches Derby County, which is currently sixth in English Football League Championship. The team’s record for this season is 20W-14D-12L. This first year of managing has showcased how well he has done and his capability to grow.
Lampard played for the club, making him a good contender. As someone who played for the club, he has deep roots there with the fans and the club itself. There is also a deep understanding of the clubs values and way of play. He has also shown before his desire to move back to the Chelsea club.
While many people would like the Chelsea legend to move back to the club, it may be too soon for him. Some have shown concerns with only having one year of managing experience that it would not work in his favor. Although there have been other great managers that made these type of moves, like Pep Guardiola, and have done well, this doesn’t mean the same for Lampard.
The difference here is that Chelsea is notorious for firing managers. Many managers are removed after one or two years. Sarri is still being replaced even after a good season this year. This also happened with Antonio Conte who won the Premier League and the FA Cup within the two years he managed at Chelsea. Many fear that Lampard would be pushed out after a bad first season.
If Hayes is chosen for the position, it will be a reach into new territory for Chelsea. If they choose Lampard, it could be received warmly with having a Chelsea legend return to the team. It will be interesting to see whom Chelsea decides to replace Sarri.
