Dallas Cowboys Investigate Health of Eric Berry

Eric Berry Free Agent

As of Wednesday, March 13, former Kansas City Chiefs safety Eric Berry is a free agent. The Chiefs released Berry after nine seasons with the team. In his time spent with Kansas City, Berry was selected to the Pro-Bowl five times. In addition, the safety earned First Team All-Pro honors three times. The only thing that has held Berry back in his career is his history of injuries. As a result, the Dallas Cowboys are investigating the safety’s health before considering making a push to sign the free agent.

Eric Berry’s Injuries

Eric Berry’s history of injuries began after his stellar rookie season. Since then, he has been plagued with what would seem to be terrible luck.

Berry suffered a torn ACL in the season opener of his sophomore season in the NFL. In 2014, Berry’s season was ended after being diagnosed with lymphoma. A few years after winning his battle with cancer, Berry ruptured his Achilles in the season opener of 2017. The injury forced Berry to miss the entirety of the 2017 season as well as the majority of the 2018 season.

Having only played a collective of four games in the past two years, Berry’s value in the free agent market is questionable. Berry is an All-Pro talent but, it is difficult to confirm whether or not he can stay healthy.

Cowboys’ Investigation

Recently, it has been rumored that the Dallas Cowboys are investigating the health of safety Eric Berry. Cowboys insider Mike Fisher reported on Twitter on Wednesday.

The Cowboys were previously the front-runners in signing former Seahawks safety Earl Thomas. Thomas was simply not in the budget for the Cowboys as the safety signed a four-year $55 million deal with the Ravens. With the Cowboys still in need of a safety, Eric Berry seems to be the obvious answer.

Berry is a 30-year-old veteran that would bring a lot of leadership to the Cowboys’ young defense. If all goes well in the health investigation, it would be expected for Dallas to make a strong push pursuing Berry.
