Weekly CS:GO News Roundup (Week of 6/25/21)

Publish Date: June 24, 2021

Welcome back to another CS:GO News Roundup! Old faces return to the scene and the major continues to develop. A reminder that IEM Cologne begins in two weeks; tune into TGH’s CS:GO page.

Daps Reenters CS:GO Scene

The legendary Canadian IGL’s last CS:GO team was the Gen.G project that had all kinds of results. Unable to breakthrough the North American Online Tournaments, Damian “Daps” Steele retired from the Valve shooter and pivoted to the NRG Valorant team for a short stint. Daps reunited with his young star of Sam “s0m” Oh, but still failed to qualify for the VCT Masters Event in Iceland. The IGL was unhappy with the results of his individual performance and the organization’s results and has effectively hung his mouse up.

In a groundbreaking move, he now reopens his CS:GO account by becoming the head coach of Evil Geniuses’ roster. The Canadian now reunites with other former teammates Vincent “Brehze” Cayonte and Tsvetelin “CeRq” Dimitrov to climb back to the summit of the rankings once more. IEM Cologne Play-ins remain the first hurdle for Daps to clear as head coach. Reenergized, the North Americans have a real shot at returning to the Cathedral.

W0xic returning to competition

Özgür “w0xic” Eker’s reputation is infamous. Making a name for himself on an international Hellraisers lineup, he shocked the world with his incredible peaks and stunning flicks. The Turkish AWP’er got his first Tier 1 opportunity under Finn “karrigan” Andersen’s mousesports and earned three huge titles with the organization.

Suddenly, after some attitude issues and internet problems during the online era, he was benched from mousesports and cast away from the CS:GO scene. Cloud9 decidedly took a liking to the Turk and immediately signed him alongside British IGL Alex “ALEX” McMeekin to take a new international roster to the top. In spite of a new opportunity, w0xic found himself with some attitude issues regardless of his peak and was discarded from the lineup.

The Turkish AWP’er now has tweeted out that he wishes to return to competition with a fully fielded lineup. While the details on the roster are under wraps, sources suggest that w0xic is banding together a potential Turkish superteam. BIG’s Ismailcan “XANTARES” Dörtkardeş and ENVY’s Buğra “Calyx” Arkın are supposedly headlining the squad.

Stockholm Major Worries

PGL’s previous champions, Gambit.

DOTA 2’s TI is finding issues with holding their event in Sweden. There is currently a standstill with Swedish authorities regarding the “legitimacy of esports” for sports visas. Valve’s MOBA now searching for alternative locations to hold the event and leaves doubts in the minds of CS:GO fans that their major may suffer the same fate. However, after contacting sources, HLTV reports that the Stockholm Major remains undeterred in their development heading into Fall. The jury is still out on an official announcement from Valve.
