Counter-Strike: Global Offensive: What Happened to Coldzera?

Marcelo “Coldzera” David was born on October 31, 1994 in São Paulo, Brazil. Also known as the Brazilian Terminator, Coldzera is a 24-year-old professional Counter-Strike: Global Offensive player for MiBR (Made in Brazil). In fact, he is one of the best players in the world, and at one point, he was considered to be the undoubted number one professional player in CS:GO.

The Peak

Specifically, a few years ago, Coldzera was the clear cut best player in the world. In August of 2015, Coldzera joined Luminosity Gaming. Coldzera proved to be a superstar for Luminosity. The all-Brazilian roster behind the clutch play of Coldzera would win a CS:GO Major.

However, in June of 2016 Luminosity Gaming’s CS:GO roster was bought by German Esports organization SK Gaming.  Coldzera ended up winning another CS:GO Major under SK Gaming. During this span of time Coldzera was putting up insane numbers. First, Coldzera finished with a 1.32 rating at the MLG Columbus 2016 Major. This was followed by a 1.37 rating at the ESL One Cologne Major in 2016.

Coldzera was widely considered to be the best player in the world from 2016 to 2017. It was at this point that Coldzera was potentially going to reach GOAT (Greatest of All Time) status. Coldzera is one of the “Gods” of CS:GO. In 2016 and 2017, Coldzera was ranked number one by HLTV for back-to-back years. This had never been done before and the CS:GO world witnessed history.

The Fall

With that being said, Coldzera has seemed to fall off. What happened to Coldzera? In July 2018 SK Gaming was bought by MiBR and since then Coldzera has struggled. Now I want to be clear, when I say that he struggled I am talking about not playing like his normal self. Coldzera on a bad day is still better than most of the players in professional CS:GO.

MiBR went through a series of roster changes during the 2018 season. The core of the Major winning Brazilian team had been broken up. I think this played a huge role in why we think Coldzera has “fallen off”. It is hard to play with teammates that you are not used to playing with. As a professional player you want to know your teammates tendencies and abilities. With this information you are able to develop a chemistry with your teammates. However, having a roster that is not stable does not help Coldzera at all.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Coldzera has not fallen off. If anything, MiBR has fallen off. The constant roster changes and trade rumors floating around did not put Coldzera in an environment that he could thrive in. He still has a top five rating at 1.20 but his team has fallen short of their goals.

We saw Coldzera drop from HLTV’s number on player in 2017 to number 10 in 2018. This is a huge drop and the biggest of any number one player of all time. However, Coldzera and MiBR have brought back the old Major winning roster from back in the day. This author and many other fans alike look forward to seeing Coldzera back in full form.
