Montreal Rebellion is Next Contenders Academy Team to Disband

Montreal Rebellion’s main tank Seb “numlocked” Barton has confirmed that Montreal Rebellion will be the next Contenders academy team to disband.

In his Twitlonger, Numlocked announced that Montreal Rebellion is disbanding due to budget cuts amid the COVID-19 pandemic. There is no formal announcement from the team at the time of writing this post. However, Numlocked said that players were allowed to self-announce beforehand. Multiple players and staff members have since come forward with a statement regarding the disbandment. The Montreal Rebellion are the Toronto Defiant’s academy team, and they recently tied for third place in the most recent season of NA Contenders. They are the ninth academy team to disband over the past year, following ATL Academy, who recently left the scene.

What Comes Next

Many Overwatch League players, both current and former, have passed through the Montreal Rebellion. Numlocked is one of many former pros to join the team after playing for the Los Angeles Valiant during the inaugural season. Other most notable players being Stanislav “Mistakes” Danilov and Andreas “Logix” Berghmans, who made his debut onto the Defiant’s main roster last season. Currently, Park “RoKy” Joo-seong and Liam “Mangachu” Campbel are on a two-way contract with the Montreal Rebellion. It is currently unknown whether they will return to the main roster. Both RoKy and Mangachu sounded hopeful about their futures in their statements while expressing sadness that their former teammates and staff deserved better.

In his Twitlonger, numlocked also announced that he is taking a break from Overwatch as a whole. He is one of many players to have made a statement regarding his future in the scene in recent days. However, unlike other players who plan on leaving the scene altogether for Valorant, Numlocked is still open to new Overwatch opportunities, as are the majority of his former teammates who are currently orgless. Losing another academy team is a massive blow to the Tier 2 community. With the hype building up for Valorant and Blizzard’s lack of care for the scene, things are looking grim.
