The Cleveland Indians have acquired Leonys Martin from the Detroit Tigers by trading Willi Castro according to The Athletic’s Robert Murray. The Tigers will also send right-handed pitching prospect Kyle Dowdy to Cleveland.
Cleveland was in the market for another outfielder and decided to pull the trigger and acquire Martin from the Tigers. Martin is hitting .251 with nine home runs and 29 RBIs this season. His defense has been solid this season, with only two errors in 74 games in the outfield this season.
The acquisition of Martin will give the Indians more options to play in the outfield as they look to contend for a World Series title.
Dowdy has a 3.77 ERA in three seasons in the minors and will stay there for a while longer in order to develop.
Detroit sent Martin and Dowdy in order to facilitate a rebuild. They are 45-62 on the season and have decided to look toward the future.
Willi Castro is a switch-hitting shortstop prospect who has a .245 batting average in Double-A this season.
