It is five weeks into the fantasy football season and the waiver wire is heating up. Any good champion will need to go to the waiver wire to acquire players to make their team even better. Here are the best players to add for week 5. (All stats and rankings are for standard scoring)
1.T.J. Yeldon, RB, Jacksonville Jaguars
Leonard Fournette has been battling hamstring injuries since his days at LSU and had to leave the game against the Jets. Jacksonville head coach Doug Marrone updated the media on the injury, “Believe me, if I knew exactly what the deal was and I could tell you — three (games), six, 10, IR, whatever — I would,” Marrone said (via ESPN). “I just don’t know. Those injuries are tough.”
Keep an eye on the injury report of Fournette, but that quote doesn’t sound good. He has just eight fantasy points this season and will likely need some time to recover.
With Fournette’s bad hamstring, Yeldon is a plug and play option for fantasy rosters. This season he is averaging over 10 points per game and stepped up big time when Fournette left with injury against the Jets. He is owned in 46.8% of ESPN leagues and is a must add with Fournette’s health.
2. Aaron Jones, RB, Green Bay Packers
In his second game back from suspension, Jones showed what he could accomplish with 13 fantasy points. He only got 11 carries, but that number should improve going forward, as he is the best back in the Green Bay timeshare. Jones went from getting the least amount of snaps (17) out of the backfield between the three relevant running backs, to getting the most (29) in the span of one week.
He will be a big part of the offense moving forward and is largely not owned because he started the season suspended. On ESPN, Jones is still available in nearly 45% of leagues.
3. Keke Coutee, WR, Houston Texans
A lot of people may not have heard of Coutee unless they are in seriously deep leagues. The rookie fourth round pick out of Texas Tech was sidelined to start the season with a hamstring injury. In their game against the Colts, the Texans showed that they wanted to get him involved. He totaled 11 receptions for 109 yards.
His production is ridiculously good for his first ever game. The Texans got rid of Braxton Miller this offseason, opening up a slot receiver position for Coutee to thrive in. He is owned in a whopping 0.4% of ESPN leagues at the moment, but that number will raise drastically after the waiver wire clears this week.
4. Geronimo Allison, WR, Green Bay Packers
Allison had a solid game against the Bills with eight catches for 80 yards. His production was a little more steady without Randall Cobb being active, although it was his third best fantasy week of the season. He failed to find the end zone, but is still a valid option for most rosters.
Fantasy owners will have to check the injury report for Allison, as he did suffer a concussion against the Bills on Sunday. He is owned in just 43.1% of leagues still and is a perfect player to replace some of the under-performers that currently are on fantasy rosters.
5. Mike Williams, WR, Los Angeles Chargers
Williams, along with Allison, was on this list last week, but they are both still available in a lot of leagues. This week, Williams didn’t have his best week with one catch for 15 yards. With 37 total fantasy points, this game should be seen as a fluke rather than a trend.
Philip Rivers will still need an elite red zone target to throw to when Keenan Allen and Antonio Gates are covered up and Williams will see more production in the future. He is owned in 53.5% of ESPN leagues.
6. Mike Davis, RB, Seattle Seahawks
With a banged up Seahawk backfield, Davis stepped up in week 4 and earned more playing time. Against the Cardinals he had 21 carries for 101 yards and 2 touchdowns. Pete Carroll has said that he expects Chris Carson back for week 5, but if Davis can stay hot, he may figure to be a solid fantasy piece.
This has the chance to be a one game wonder from Davis and his long term fantasy value can’t be known. He is worth a pickup this week will Seattle figures out how they want to move forward. He is available in virtually every ESPN league for the time being.
