College football: Week 6 news and notes

Six weeks into the college football season has certainly brought a lot of excitement. With the more weeks that go on, more news and notes will be put together. Here are some of the things happening around the sport of college football.

UMass football coach suspended

UMass head football coach Mark Whipple has been suspended for one game for his postgame comments saying that Ohio’s defense “raped us” according to Matt Vautor of MassLive.

Trevor Lawrence likely to play against Wake Forest

Although he left the game with concussion-like symptoms against Syracuse, Trevor Lawrence is on schedule to play Saturday against Wake Forest. So far this season, Lawrence has thrown for 693 yards, nine touchdowns and two interceptions.

Baylor has received a notice of allegations from the NCAA for sexual assault scandal

According to multiple reports, Baylor has been notified of the allegations against them from the NCAA for the sexual assault scandal.  The school has been cited with lack of institutional control by the NCAA, as first reported by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Per USA Today,”Baylor has 90 days to respond to the notice, which it received last month, according to the newspaper. The NCAA then has 60 days to reply thereafter.”

NC State and ECU schedule game for Dec. 1

NC State and ECU both had games cancelled due to Hurricane Florence. The two schools have reached an agreement to play on December 1 to make up for the lost game as announced on Tuesday. The Wolfpack will host ECU at Carter-Finley Stadium at noon EST. The game will be cancelled if either team qualifies for their respective conference championship games, which would occur on the same date.

List of coach salaries released

USA Today Sports released the list of salaries for all FBS coaches at public universities. Names that may surprise are Jim Harbaugh (third-highest), Lovie Smith (13th-highest) and Brian Kelly (59th-highest).

Tennessee St. linebacker improving daily

On Saturday, in a game where Tennessee State traveled to Vanderbilt, Tennessee State had linebacker Christon Abercrombie go down with a serious head injury. He had emergency surgery and is now recovering. He is in critical condition, but is improving daily.

Former NFL players are chipping in to help out Abercrombie and his family.

Former Clemson RB Fuller dead at age 22

Former Clemson running back C.J. Fuller is dead at age 22. He was a part of Clemson’s National Championship team, but was in the process of transferring as announced in February. Fuller was arrested for armed robbery.

Dabo Swinney gave this statement: “Our thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathies are with C.J.’s family,” Swinney said. “I’ve known C.J. for a long time and watched him grow up through the Easley rec leagues all the way through Easley High School. I’m proud of what he accomplished as a Clemson Tiger, most of all, his accomplishment of being a Clemson graduate. Our deepest condolences and the thoughts of our program are with his family this evening. May he rest in peace.”

Other news and notes

  • UNLV quarterback Arrmani Rogers is out for six weeks with a foot injury.
  • Maryland quarterback Max Bortenshlager is out for the year after ankle surgery. This leaves Tyler DeSue as the only scholarship quarterback on the roster (Per 247 sports).
  • Nebraska WR Tyjon Linsey is transferring.
  • Big Ten Network analyst Matt Millen will not return to the booth this season as he focuses on his health.
  • Wisconsin tight end Zander Neuville is out for the season (per Jesse Temple)
  • Former coaches Steve Spurrier (Florida) and Les Miles (LSU) have a bet on the annual game this weekend. If LSU wins, Spurrier will eat grass like Miles used to do when coaching. If Florida wins, Miles will have to wear a visor, much like Spurrier did during his tenure as a head coach.
