Fantasy football season is getting closer and closer. Every year millions of people play fantasy and with that comes the prep work to make sure that every draft is one that can produce a champion. This article will go through show what happened an ESPN fantasy football mock draft and analyze the results. This is for a 10 team, standard scoring league.
Team #1
Team number one had the first pick, pick number 20, 21, etc. The teams following this one will follow the draft order.
Roster: Le’Veon Bell, Devonta Freeman, Christian McCaffrey, Amari Cooper, Marvin Jones Jr., Delanie Walker, Robert Woods, Pierre Garcon, Will Fuller V, Carlos Hyde, Giovani Bernard, Matthew Stafford, Trey Burton, Alex Smith, Jaguars D/ST, Harrison Butker
While this team is loaded at running back, waiting on receivers until rounds four and five is a bold strategy. With Bell as the first overall pick, this team can be competitive, but without a great receiver on the roster, it could be tough to make the playoffs. This person was smart to wait on a quarterback, but selecting two tight ends is unnecessary.
Team #2
Roster: Todd Gurley, LeSean McCoy, Mike Evans, Derrick Henry, Alshon Jeffery, Chris Hogan, Marlon Mack, Russell Wilson, Tevin Coleman, Ty Montgomery, Josh Doctson, Jack Doyle, David Njoku, Matt Ryan, Eagles D/ST, Matt Prater
This team reached on both McCoy and Mack, leaving their running backs weak. McCoy in the second round is a reach because he is aging and more than half of his offensive line is gone from last season. Mack will be fighting for carries with a couple of rookies. The wide receivers are solid, but the real key to this team is getting Russell Wilson with good value. The outlook for this team is average, but could get worse if injuries pile up at the running back position.
Team #3
Roster: David Johnson, Davante Adams, Stefon Diggs, Royce Freeman, Ronald Jones, Greg Olsen, Corey Davis, Robby Anderson, Andrew Luck, Kenny Stills, Marqise Lee, Ben Roethlisberger, Theo Riddick, Danny Amendola, Rams D/ST, Jake Elliot
Team number three aced the first two picks, but after that, it went downhill. They are banking on injured players, David Johnson, Andrew Luck and Greg Olsen, will return to form. Drafting these players is not a huge issue, but the team does not have great depth behind Adams and Johnson. The strategy of picking Luck means that taking Roethlisberger as a backup is the right call in case the Colts’ star doesn’t come back as well as he hopes. This team will struggle in this hypothetical league.
Team #4
Roster: Ezekiel Elliot, A.J. Green, Rob Gronkowski, Golden Tate, Josh Gordon, Lamar Miller, Emmanuel Sanders, Carson Wentz, DeVante Parker, Jamison Crowder, Nelson Agholor, Chris Godwin, James White, Jimmy Garoppolo, Vikings D/ST, Robbie Gould
With the makeup of this roster, team number four can make a run at the playoffs. With stars like Ezekiel Elliot, A.J. Green and Rob Gronkowski leading the way, they are solid at the top of every position. There are some issues with this team though. There are only three running backs on the roster, The first two are starting caliber, but James White as the only backup leaves a team vulnerable. If this team owner is active enough to get running backs off the waiver wire, they could win this league.
Team #5
Roster: Saquon Barkley, Michael Thomas, Joe Mixon, Doug Baldwin, Kenyan Drake, Tom Brady, Evan Engram, Isaiah Crowell, Marquise Goodwin, Sterling Shepard, Rishard Matthews, DeSean Jackson, Chris Carson, John Ross, Texans D/ST, Chris Boswell
If Saquon Barkley lives up to expectations, this team is one of the best in the league. There is a good balance at each position and depth. Barkley, Mixon and Drake create a good trio of running backs. Thomas Baldwin and Goodwin are a good trio of receivers. Evan Engram is a solid draft pick in that range and so is Tom Brady. This team makes the playoffs.
Team #6
Roster: DeAndre Hopkins, Keenan Allen, Travis Kelce, Demaryius Thomas, Rashad Penny, Dion Lewis, Michael Crabtree, Cam Newton, Cooper Kupp, Jordan Reed, Allen Hurns, Tyler Lockett, Devontae Booker, Dez Bryant, Ravens D/ST, Matt Bryant
Simply put, this team is not good. There aren’t any top-quality running backs and there is no depth at the position. This owner would have to pull off some trades for running backs to make it competitive. When a team goes on auto-draft, something like this can happen. If a draft is online, it’s likely that someone will have to auto-draft, even for just a little bit.
Team #7
Roster: Antonio Brown, Julio Jones, Jordan Howard, Zach Ertz, Mark Ingram, Marshawn Lynch, Sony Michel, Deshaun Watson, Jamaal Williams, Julian Edelman, Mohamed Sanu, Nick Chubb, Patrick Mahomes, Aaron Jones, Greg Zuerlein, Titans D/ST
This team has a chance to make the playoffs. There is some risk factor though, with both Edelman and Ingram being suspended, the team won’t have depth at the start of the season. If the team can survive the first three or four weeks, it has the legs to compete.
Team #8
Roster: Alvin Kamara, Melvin Gordon, T.Y. Hilton, Tyreek Hill, Alex Collins, Brandin Cooks, Rex Burkhead, Devin Funchess, Chris Thompson, Jordy Nelson, Michael Gallup, D.J. Moore, Phillip Rivers, George Kittle, Stephen Gostkowski, Broncos D/ST
By waiting on a quarterback ant tight end, this team has the talent and depth to make the playoffs. Kamara and Gordon should both get heavy workloads. There are some doubts on the wide receivers, but playing the matchup game, this team should be able to get by. Rivers is aging, but had a good season last year. Tight end is weaker but if one isn’t drafted early it is pointless to take one in the middle rounds with point differentials. Team number eight will be able to sneak into the playoffs.
Team #9
Roster: Odell Beckham Jr, Leonard Fournette, Adam Thielen, Allen Robinson, Jay Ajayi, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Randall Cobb, Sammy Watkins, Tarik Cohen, Kyle Rudolph, Kenny Golladay, Kirk Cousins, Latavius Murray, Rob Kelley, Patriots D/ST, Will Lutz
Team number nine had a solid start to the draft, but failed to address the running back position adequately. With Tarik Cohen, Latavius Murray and Rob Kelley as the backup running backs will not get the job done. Jay Ajayi isn’t the strongest RB2 as is, so the running back position as a whole needs help. This will prevent them from being successful.
Team #10
Roster: Kareem Hunt, Dalvin Cook, Jerick McKinnon, Larry Fitzgerald, Jarvis Landry, Aaron Rodgers, Jimmy Graham, Duke Johnson Jr., Kelvin Benjamin, Kerryon Johnson, Paul Richardson, Cameron Meredith, Drew Brees, Calvin Ridley, Justin Tucker, Chargers D/ST
This team is weak at wide receiver, but may be able to get past that with the good running back play and Aaron Rodgers. Selecting two quarterbacks makes no sense when you have Aaron Rodgers, as a player who can provide depth is way more valuable than a one-week starter. This owner did get Drew Brees as the backup though. All in all, this is another competitive team, but they may fall short of the playoffs due to wide receiver play.
