The college football season is approaching. There is always debate over ranking the best players in the sport. Here are the top 25 college football quarterbacks heading into the 2024 season.
Note: While projection of what a player can be is considered, most rankings are from what has been seen on the field. These are not NFL Draft rankings, but rather focus on the best players in college football.
25-21
25. Rocco Becht, Iowa State Cyclones
Rocco Becht was thrust into the starting lineup last season as a freshman after some Cyclones were involved in a gambling investigation. After passing for 3,120 yards last season Becht will look to top those numbers this year.
24. Donovan Smith, Houston Cougars
Smith provides a dual-threat, as he passed for over 2,800 yards and rushed for over 450 for Houston. He has generated some NFL Draft buzz, but another good season at the college level is in store first.
23. Conner Weigman, Texas A&M Aggies
Weigman was a highly-rated recruit, but has struggled with injuries. When he is on the field, he has looked solid, as he has passed for 1,875 yards, 16 touchdowns and two interceptions on 68.9 percent completion.
22. Kyron Drones, Virginia Tech Hokies
Drones didn’t even start the season as the starter in 2023, but still passed for 2,085 yards, 17 touchdowns and three interceptions on 58.2 percent completion. He also rushed for 818 yards, showing his versatility. A full season as the starter should show more for Drones.
21. Will Rogers, Washington Huskies
A change in the offense last season at Mississippi State held Rogers back, but now Rogers is playing for Washington. In Jedd Fisch’s offense, Rogers can show why he is one of the active leaders in passing yards with over 12,000.
20-16
20. Drew Allar, Penn State Nittany Lions
Allar was effective last season and did a good job protecting the football. He could rank higher on this list, but he struggled in big games. If he shows up in those games this season, he could move up this list for next season or end up heading to the NFL.
19. Will Howard, Ohio State Buckeyes
After passing for over 2,600 yards last season for Kansas State, Howard now takes the reins of the Ohio State offense. He also has the threat to run, as he totaled 921 rushing yards as a Wildcat.
18. Garrett Greene, West Virginia Mountaineers
Greene helped turn things around at West Virginia last season with over 2,400 passing yards and 700 rushing yards. His dual-threat abilities can lead West Virginia to another bowl game this season.
17. Prestone Stone, SMU Mustangs
SMU is making the move to the ACC and they’ll have an experienced quarterback at the helm. Stone passed for 3,126 yards and 26 touchdowns last season.
16. Seth Henigan, Memphis Tigers
Henigan put up massive numbers in the AAC last season, throwing for 3,883 yards and 32 touchdowns. He’ll be one of the best group of five quarterbacks in the country.
15-11
15. Byrum Brown, USF Bulls
Brown passed for over 3,000 yards and rushed for over 800 last season for the Bulls. If the Bulls make a push in the AAC, Brown will be a large reason why.
14. Riley Leonard, Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Leonard had a great 2022 season for Duke, but battled injuries last season. With over 4,000 passing and 1,000 rushing yards in his career, he takes his talents to Notre Dame, who are looking for an offensive lift.
13. Grayson McCall, NC State Wolfpack
McCall has used his legs and his arm over his five seasons at Coastal Carolina. With 10,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards in his career, McCall brings good quarterback play to NC State, something they desperately needed.
12. Cam Rising, Utah Utes
Although he was injured and missed all of last season, Rising has had a wonderful career and is returning this season. He has led the Utes to two Rose Bowls and has 5,572 passing yards and nearly 1,000 rushing yards in his career.
11. Kaidon Salter, Liberty Flames
Salter was one of the most improved quarterbacks in the country last season, passing for over 3,000 and rushing for over 1,000 yards. Liberty has a chance to make the CFP as the group of five representative, but it will only come if Salter plays up to par.
10-6
10. Brady Cook, Missouri Tigers
Cook helped get Missouri to 10 wins last season, with over 3,000 passing yards and only six interceptions. If Cook can replicate his success, a trip to the CFP could be in store.
9. Noah Fifita, Arizona Wildcats
Fifita may not be the biggest quarterback, but he has a lot of talent. He didn’t begin the season as the starter in 2023, but still managed to throw for 2,869 yards, 25 touchdowns and six interceptions. Fifita decided to stay at Arizona rather than follow his head coach to Washington.
8. Jalon Daniels, Kansas Jayhawks
When he is on the field, Daniels is dynamic, but staying healthy has been an issue. He has passed for over 4,200 yards in his career. If he plays the whole season, Kansas has a chance to compete in the Big 12.
7. Cam Ward, Miami Hurricanes
Ward had two great seasons at Washington State and now is tasked with turning Miami around. He has nearly 7,000 passing yards in his career and can extend plays with his legs.
6. Jalen Milroe, Alabama Crimson Tide
Milroe is a threat with his legs and his deep ball. He needs to work on his touch, but he was successful last season, leading Alabama to the CFP.
5-1
5. Jackson Dart, Ole Miss
Dart had the best season of his career last year, throwing for 3,364 yards, 23 touchdowns and five interceptions on 65.1 percent completion. Ole Miss has some pretty high expectations for the season and a lot of that stems from Dart.
4. Shedeur Sanders, Colorado Buffaloes
Sanders gets a lot of headlines, but his play has been great. In his first season at Colorado, Sanders passed for 3,230 yards, 27 touchdowns and three interceptions on 69.3 percent completion.
3. Quinn Ewers, Texas Longhorns
Ewers had a good, albeit inconsistent, season for the Longhorns that saw them go to the CFP. He passed for 3,479 yards, 22 touchdowns and six interceptions on 69 percent completion. With a little improvement, Ewers could be the best quarterback in college.
2. Dillon Gabriel, Oregon Ducks
Gabriel won’t be the best draft prospect on this list, but he has a chance to do great things in Oregon’s system. He has passed for 14,895 yards, which makes him the active leader in the FBS. With the talent around him at Oregon, Gabriel can have his best season yet.
1. Carson Beck, Georgia Bulldogs
While he started the season off slow, Beck showed huge signs of development by the end. He passed for 3,941 yards, 24 touchdowns and six interceptions on 72.4 percent completion. With a good season, Beck can lead Georgia to the CFP and help his draft stock in the process.
