The Gameplan for Marshall head coach Charles Huff

Publish Date: January 28, 2021

Marshall had an impressive year during the 2020 college football season under Doc Holiday. The Herd beat an AP ranked team in Appalachian State for the first time since 2003. The Thundering Herd also went undefeated most of the season. Marshall did struggle late in the season dropping games against Rice, UAB in the conference title game and Buffalo in the Camellia Bowl.

This was not enough for Holiday to keep his job. He made multiple appearances in Conference USA Championship games and won one conference championship in 2014. Holiday also won multiple bowls with his time with The Herd. Marshall now has a new coach in Charles Huff who was the former Alabama running backs coach at Alabama. This article will give everyone everything they need know about Marshall’s new head coach Charles Huff and his gameplan at Marshall.

Charles Huff’s resume is impressive. He was the running backs coach at Alabama during the 2020 season and won the National Championship. Huff was the top recruiter in the nation for Alabama in his time there. He also was a running backs coach from 2014 to 2017 at Penn State where he coached one of the most talented running backs in Penn State history, Saquon Barkley. During a press conference where Marshall introduced Huff, he laid out a plan on what he expects to do with this Marshall team. First off, he said that everyone around the university needs to work together to produce the best football team on game day. Charles Huff also stated that his plan is not a rebuilding process for Marshall. This makes sense because Marshall had a successful year in 2020 with the returning star quarterback Grant Wells. He threw for over 2,000 yards and 18 touchdowns in his 2020 campaign with Marshall. Huff also laid out what the offense will be like under his control. Huff said that he wanted to produce the fastest team in college football. He wants his opponents after playing Marshall to say that, “they don’t want to play this team again.” Huff knows that expectations in Huntington will be high for Marshall next year. During the press conference he promised that his expectations of this team are even higher.

What Charles Huff has done at Marshall since he was hired

Huff has brought a lot excitement. He has been very active on social media updating Marshall fans and the nation on what he is doing. Huff has already visited the plane crash site where the Marshall football team, coaches and boosters tragically lost their lives on November 14, 1970. He also visited the graveyard where those 75 people are buried. He has posted pictures on Twitter with him getting involved within the community. Not only is Huff getting involved with in the community, but he is already on the recruiting trail. There have been multiple upcoming college athletes thanking Charles Huff and Marshall for giving them offers. It will be exciting to see what type of talent Huff can bring to Marshall in the upcoming years.

The fans in Huntington need to be patient with Huff in the upcoming 2021 season. There are a lot of growing pains that go along with bringing a new head coach such as losing recruits and hiring a new coaching staff. It was already announced that Huff is bringing in a new coaching staff to Marshall. He has only kept a couple coaches that were with the Thundering Herd in 2020. It will be exciting to see if Huff can bring Marshall to the next level. This is the game plan that Huff has put into place for Marshall in the coming years.
