Penn State has decided to fire James Franklin after three straight losses, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
The Nittany Lions were ranked highly in the preseason, but are now 3-3 with three straight losses. Penn State was a 20-point favorite in each of the last two games.
Franklin was 104-45 in 12 seasons at the school. Penn State will be on the hook for over $49 million in the buyout for Franklin. Terry Smith will take over as interim coach for the rest of the season. He was the associate head coach and cornerbacks coach before Franklin’s dismissal.
Penn State also lost starting quarterback Drew Allar for the season in an injury during the Northwestern game. They play at Iowa this week.
