A new rivalry trophy was added to the ranks on Monday. The winner of football games between the University of Louisville and the University of Miami (FL) will receive the Schnellenberger Trophy, which features the boots that Howard Schnellenberger famously wore.
The University of Louisville Football Twitter account released the news on Monday.
The significance in naming the trophy after Schnellenberger is attributed to the man coaching both programs during his college football coaching career. He won the National Championship with Miami in 1983, but then resigned to become part owner of a Miami-based USFL franchise.
For multiple reasons, his USFL tenure fell through and he returned to the college ranks to coach the University of Louisville from 1985-1994. He finished his tenure at Louisville two games under .500, but essentially saved the program from complete irrelevance during his time there.
