Colorado set to Return to the Big 12

Publish Date: July 27, 2023

Colorado has joined the wave of conference realignment, this time returning to the Big 12. ESPN’s Pete Thamel is reporting the Big 12 Presidents and Chancellors voted to approve the return of Colorado to the conference.

Colorado was previously in the Big 12 from 1996 to 2010. Before that, they were a member of the Big Eight, who then joined with teams from the Southwest Conference to form the Big 12.

With USC and UCLA already deciding to join the Big Ten, the Pac-12 was set to be down to 10 teams. Other schools were petitioning to join other conferences as well, which could eventually cripple the conference. Colorado moved before that could happen.

In the Big 12, Colorado will join Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, TCU, Houston, Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State, Houston, Cincinnati, Baylor, UCF and BYU. Texas and Oklahoma are currently in the conference, but they are moving to the SEC following this academic year.
