Each week teams will be fighting for position in an effort to make the College Football Playoff. The teams will be ranked each week, but what matters most is who they have played and defeated already on the field. Here is College Football Playoff Bracketology: Selection Sunday.
Note: This will be updated following each week of games during the season.
1. Oregon Ducks (13-0)
Oregon won the Big Ten Championship Game finishing the season as the only Power Four team undefeated. They are unquestionably the no. 1 seed.
2. Georgia Bulldogs (11-2)
The Bulldogs won an overtime thriller over Texas to win the SEC. They had a tough schedule and finished with two losses, but now have an automatic bid to the CFP.
3. Arizona State Sun Devils (11-2)
Arizona State won the Big 12 Championship Game and did so in impressive fashion, blowing out Iowa State. With other game results, the Sun Devils should move up to the third seed.
4. Boise State Broncos (12-1)
Boise State defeated UNLV for the second time this season to take the Mountain West Championship. They could be jumped by Arizona State, but can stay in front of Clemson to get a first-round bye.
5. Texas Longhorns (11-2)
Texas has lost two games, both of which were to Georgia. They don’t have the most impressive wins, but the loss to Georgia likely won’t drop them too far down the rankings.
6. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (12-1)
Notre Dame took an awful loss to Northern Illinois, but played like a machine the rest of the way, dominating their competition. They didn’t play in a conference championship, but will host a home CFP game.
7. Ohio State Buckeyes (10-2)
Ohio State took an awful loss to Michigan, but are still in a good spot to host a home playoff game. The Buckeyes have wins over Penn State and Indiana and arguably should be ranked ahead of them.
8. Penn State Nittany Lions (11-2)
Penn State won the games they were supposed to this season, but lost to Ohio State and then Oregon in the Big Ten Championship Game. The loss in the Big Ten Championship might drop them several spots in the rankings, as they lost head to head to Ohio State.
9. Tennessee Volunteers (10-2)
Tennessee is right on the bubble of hosting a home playoff game, but are likely on the outside looking in. They have two losses and a win over Alabama helping their case.
10. Indiana Hoosiers (11-1)
Indiana lost just one game this season, but are likely going to play on the road due to a pretty manageable schedule throughout the season.
11. Alabama Crimson Tide (9-3)
With SMU’s loss to Clemson in the ACC Championship Game, Alabama can slide into the CFP with three losses. They were ranked 11 last week and will likely make the field in place of SMU, who lost in the ACC Championship Game.
12. Clemson Tigers (10-3)
Clemson stole a bid by winning the ACC Championship Game over SMU. With their low-ranking heading into the week, they will likely be ranked as the 12th team heading into the CFP.
SMU Mustangs (11-2)
SMU came up short in the ACC Championship Game and while the committee has mentioned that they don’t want to penalize teams for making their conference championships, it is likely going to happen.
Miami Hurricanes (11-2)
Miami was ranked behind Alabama and SMU and will likely stay that way heading into the final rankings.
Ole Miss Rebels (9-3)
Ole Miss can make a pretty good case that they should be in the CFP, but the committee ranked them outside last time and it will stay that way.
South Carolina Gamecocks (9-3)
South Carolina got hot late in the season, but will be on the outside looking in for the CFP.
Army Black Knights (11-1)
Army had a great season, but will rank behind Boise State and miss the CFP.
Marshall Thundering Herd (10-3)
Marshall won the Sun Belt, but won’t make the CFP.
Ohio Bobcats (10-3)
Ohio upset Miami (Ohio) in the MAC Championship Game to be on of the five group of five champions.
Jacksonville State Gamecocks (9-4)
Jacksonville State is still relatively new to the FBS, but they won the C-USA. They won’t make the CFP this season.
