Each week teams will be fighting for position in an effort to make the College Football Playoff. The teams will be ranked each week, but what matters most is who they have played and defeated already on the field. Here is College Football Playoff Preseason Bracketology: September 8.
Note: This will be updated following each week of games during the season.
First Round Byes
1. Georgia Bulldogs (2-0)
There wasn’t much doubt, but Georgia defeated Tennessee Tech in week 2. After Clemson looked better against Appalachian State, Georgia’s week 1 win looks much better.
This week: at Kentucky WIldcats (1-1)
2. Ohio State Buckeyes (2-0)
Ohio State hasn’t been tested through two weeks, as they defeated both Akron and Western Michigan easily. Their talent is very apparent and they are the favorites to win the Big Ten.
This week: BYE
3. Miami Hurricanes (2-0)
After beating Florida in week 1, Miami defeated Florida A&M in week 2. They take the automatic bid as the projected champions of the ACC.
This week: vs. Ball State Cardinals (1-0)
4. Utah Utes (2-0)
Utah had a nonconference game against Baylor, who is in their conference, and won even with Baylor cutting the deficit in the second half. They lost quarterback Cam Rising to injury, which could really hurt the Utes down the road, but it didn’t seem to be too serious.
This week: at Utah State Aggies (1-1)
First Round Hosts
5. Texas Longhorns (2-0)
In Ann Arbor, Texas completely controlled the game against Michigan to move to 2-0. That followed up a good performance against Colorado State. Texas has a great at-large resume.
This week: vs. UTSA Roadrunners (1-1)
6. USC Trojans (2-0)
USC had a good win over LSU in week 1 and this week defeated Utah State. With an impressive win already, they can now go into a bye week and prepare for the rest of their season.
This week: BYE
7. Tennessee Volunteers (2-0)
Nico Iamaleava didn’t play his best against NC State, but Tennessee still won, which moves them up the rankings. It was a ranked win and Tennessee also looked good doing it.
This week: vs. Kent State Golden Flashes (0-2)
8. Penn State Nittany Lions (2-0)
Penn State really struggled with Bowling Green in week 2. They still have the week 1 win over West Virginia helping their ranking.
This week: BYE
Last Four In
9. Alabama Crimson Tide (2-0)
Alabama struggled against USF at home, but the Crimson Tide pulled away late. It was a good win, as USF is a good group of five team that can still play their way to the CFP.
This week: at Wisconsin Badgers (2-0)
10. Ole Miss Rebels (2-0)
Ole Miss hasn’t had to break much of a sweat in their first two games, as they defeated Middle Tennessee this weekend. They are ranked based on the eye-test and talent on the roster, so it will be interesting to see what they do when they play better competition.
This week: at Wake Forest Demon Deacons (1-1)
11. Oregon Ducks (2-0)
Oregon won narrowly against Boise State in week 2. It is a solid win, but there are some big concerns about Oregon before their conference slate has even started.
This week: at Oregon State Beavers (2-0)
12. UNLV Rebels (2-0)
The Rebels dominated Houston in week 1 and beat Utah Tech in week 2. After Houston played Oklahoma close in week 2, UNLV looks even better.
This week: at Kansas Jayhawks (1-1)
First Four Out- At Large
Oklahoma State Cowboys (2-0)
Oklahoma State had a comeback victory over Arkansas in week 2. They struggled to run the ball effectively, so it was encouraging to see them win while Ollie Gordon didn’t provide his usual output.
This week: at Tulsa Golden Hurricane (1-1)
Kansas State Wildcats (2-0)
The Wildcats struggled on the road at Tulane, but were able to get the win. The Green Wave should be a solid group of five team, so the game was a good test.
This week: vs. Arizona Wildcats (2-0)
Iowa State Cyclones (2-0)
Iowa State had to come from behind, but they nailed a late field goal to defeat their ranked rivals, Iowa. The Big 12 could be wide open for more Cyclones wins.
This week: BYE
Oklahoma Sooners (2-0)
Oklahoma looked bad against Houston, but they escaped with a win. With other ranked teams ahead of them losing, Oklahoma moves into the first four out.
This week: vs. Tulane Green Wave (1-1)
First Four Out- Group of Five Spot
Boise State Broncos (1-1)
Boise State may have lost on the road at Oregon, but they showed they could compete with some of the better teams in college football. If they can win their conference, the Broncos have a great shot to represent the group of five in the CFP.
This week: BYE
USF Bulls (1-1)
Like Boise State, USF traveled to a tough environment and played well. Alabama pulled away at the very end, but if the committee watched the whole game, they should be impressed with USF.
This week: at Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles (1-1)
Tulane Green Wave (1-1)
Tulane played Kansas State close and despite losing a lot from last season, including head coach Willie Fritz, look like a threat in the AAC.
This week: at Oklahoma Sooners (2-0)
Northern Illinois Huskies (2-0)
Northern Illinois got the win of the college football season so far by defeating Notre Dame. If they can win out and get the MAC Championship, they could be the group of five representatives.
This week: BYE
