Each week teams will be fighting for position in an effort to make the College Football Playoff. The teams will be ranked each week, but what matters most is who they have played and defeated already on the field. Here is College Football Playoff Preseason Bracketology: September 29.
Note: This will be updated following each week of games during the season.
First Round Byes
1. Alabama Crimson Tide (4-0)
Alabama got the best win of the college football season by hanging on at home and defeating Georgia. They don’t have much left on the resume, but they should be seen as the top team in the country after the win.
This week: at Vanderbilt Commodores (2-2)
2. Ohio State Buckeyes (4-0)
Ohio State played their first power four team this week and demolished Michigan State on the road. The Buckeyes still don’t have a marquee win, but they are the favorites to win the Big Ten.
This week: vs. Iowa Hawkeyes (3-1)
3. Miami Hurricanes (5-0)
On Friday night, Miami held on for the win over Virginia Tech by pulling the ball out on a hail mary before a catch was completed. They stay undefeated and along with Clemson look like good bets to make the ACC Championship Game.
This week: at California Golden Bears (3-1)
4. BYU Cougars (5-0)
BYU defeated Kansas State last week and kept the momentum going by beating Baylor in week 5. They are undefeated and have put themselves in the thick of the Big 12 race.
This week: BYE
First Round Hosts
5. Texas Longhorns (5-0)
Texas has been without starting quarterback Quinn Ewers for the last two weeks, but backup Arch Manning has steadied the ship. They have their big win over Michigan, which looks better after the Wolverines defeated USC last week.
This week: BYE
6. Tennessee Volunteers (4-0)
Tennessee was off this week after defeating Oklahoma on the road. They also have a decent win over NC State in the nonconference schedule. There are still some tough games to be played, but Tennessee looks good early.
This week: at Arkansas Razorbacks (3-2)
7. Georgia Bulldogs (3-1)
It was a tough loss for Georgia against Alabama, but it was on the road. They also played well in the second half. The Bulldogs will move down the rankings this week, but it won’t be by much.
This week: vs. Auburn Tigers (2-3)
8. Oregon Ducks (4-0)
Oregon still hasn’t played up to their potential, but they are 4-0 after beating UCLA. Their win over Boise State is solid, but the schedule gets tougher from here.
This week: vs. Michigan State Spartans (3-2)
Last Four In
9. Penn State Nittany Lions (4-0)
Penn State defeated a ranked Illinois team by 14 points. That paired with their win over West Virginia gives them a solid start to the season.
This week: vs. UCLA Bruins (1-3)
10. Missouri Tigers (4-0)
The Tigers were off this week. While they haven’t looked the most polished, they are undefeated with a win over Boston College, who was ranked at the time, under their belts.
This week: at Texas A&M Aggies (4-1)
11. Iowa State Cyclones (4-0)
This week, Iowa State notched a 20-0 win over Houston. The Cyclones are undefeated with a win over Iowa helping their case.
This week: vs. Baylor Bears (2-3)
12. UNLV Rebels (4-0)
UNLV had a lot of drama surrounding he program this week, which resulted in a new starting quarterback, Hajj-Malik Williams, taking the field. They got the win over a solid Fresno State team in blowout fashion. The Rebels have two power four wins already and have a chance for another this week.
This week: vs. Syracuse Orange (3-1)
First Four Out- At-Large
Clemson Tigers (3-1)
Clemson destroyed Stanford 40-14. They are undefeated since losing to Georgia in the season-opening game of the season and look like they could win the ACC.
This week: at Florida State Seminoles (1-4)
Ole Miss Rebels (4-1)
Ole Miss lost a close one to Kentucky at home. They drop out of the CFP field for now, because they don’t have quality wins to help their case, but bigger games are ahead.
This week: at South Carolina Gamecocks (3-1)
Utah Utes (4-1)
The Utes didn’t move the ball well against Arizona and lost. They were without starting quarterback Cam Rising again, but it appears he is close to returning. Utah needs him healthy to get the offense going.
This week: BYE
Kansas State Wildcats (4-1)
Kansas State pulled away from Oklahoma State in the second half to get a ranked win. Their win over Arizona now looks better after they defeated Utah.
This week: BYE
First Four Out- Group of Five Spot
Boise State Broncos (3-1)
Boise State beat Washington State by 21 points this week. Their only loss is to Oregon. If they can beat UNLV in a few weeks, Boise State is likely going to be the frontrunner to make the CFP as a group of five team.
This week: vs. Utah State Aggies (1-3)
James Madison Dukes (4-0)
After dropping 70 on UNC and winning, James Madison scored 63 on Ball State this weekend to go to 4-0. They can put up points and are currently leading the Sun Belt.
This week: at UL Monroe Warhawks (3-1)
Navy Midshipmen (4-0)
Navy defeated Memphis last week and this week got a win over UAB. The Midshipmen are one of the top teams in the AAC so far.
This week: at Air Force Falcons (1-3)
Army Black Knights (4-0)
The Black Knights don’t have a signature win, but are undefeated. They are new members of the AAC and are doing well so far.
This week: at Tulsa Golden Hurricane (2-3)
