Each week, teams will be fighting for position in an effort to make the College Football Playoff. The teams will be ranked each week, but what matters most is who they have played and defeated already on the field. Here is College Football Playoff Preseason Bracketology: September 7.
Note: This will be updated following each week of games during the season. During the season more notes about the notable wins, losses and schedule will be included for each team.
1. Ohio State Buckeyes (2-0)*
Ohio State stomped Grambling this week and were not tested. The Buckeyes keep the top spot after beating Texas in week 1.
This week: vs. Ohio Bobcats (1-1)
2. LSU Tigers (2-0)*
LSU didn’t start the game well, but pulled away late against Louisiana Tech. While their win over Clemson looks shakier now because they struggled against Troy, they still get credit for the big win until Clemson actually stumbles.
This week: vs. Florida Gators (1-1)
3. Miami Hurricanes (2-0)*
Miami defeated Bethune-Cookman 45-3 on Saturday. That follows up their huge win over Notre Dame in week 1 and keeps them in the third spot this week.
This week: vs. USF Bulls (2-0)
4. Florida State Seminoles (2-0)
Florida State dominated East Texas A&M 77-3. Their win over Alabama looks like it might hold up well after the Crimson Tide dominated in their week 2 game.
This week: BYE
5. USF Bulls (2-0)*
USF followed up their week 1 win over Boise State with another impressive performance, upsetting Florida in the Swamp. With two big wins, they are the leader in the clubhouse to make the CFP out of G5 teams.
This week: at Miami Hurricanes (2-0)
6. Mississippi State Bulldogs (2-0)
After winning two games last year, Mississippi State matched last season’s total by defeating a ranked, reigning conference champion in Arizona State.
This week: vs. Alcorn State Braves (FCS) (0-2)
7. Oklahoma Sooners (2-0)
Oklahoma hosted Michigan and were able to win a defensive battle. It was a big win that will be nice to have, as the Sooners have a tough schedule ahead.
This week: at Temple Owls (2-0)
8. Iowa State Cyclones (3-0)*
Iowa State defeated their rivals, Iowa, 16-13 in week 2. As a result of playing in week 0, Iowa State has three wins and two of them are over power conference teams.
This week: at Arkansas State Red Wolves (1-1)
9. Illinois Fighting Illini (2-0)
After defeating Western Illinois by 49 points in week 1, Illinois earned a 26-point win over Duke in week 2. The Blue Devils won nine games last season and the road win over a power conference team will be nice to have for their resume.
This week: vs. Western Michigan Broncos (0-2)
10. Tennessee Volunteers (2-0)
Tennessee demolished East Tennessee State this week. The week 1 over Syracuse bolsters the early resume for the Volunteers.
This week: vs. Georgia Bulldogs (2-0)
11. South Carolina Gamecocks (2-0)
The Gamecocks defeated South Carolina State 38-10 this week. In week 1, they had a power conference win over Virginia Tech, which now looks a bit worse after the Hokies lost to Vanderbilt.
This week: vs. Vanderbilt (2-0)
12. Utah Utes (2-0)
Utah defeated UCLA in week 1 for a power conference win, albeit against a team that hasn’t won a game yet. They had another good performance in week 2 by beating Cal Poly 63-9.
This week: at Wyoming Cowboys (2-0)
Penn State Nittany Lions (2-0)
A win over FIU won’t help Penn State break these rankings, but the bulk of their resume can be earned later on this season.
This week: vs. Villanova Wildcats (FCS) (1-0)
Oregon Ducks (2-0)
There was a lot of trash talk this week, but Oregon took care of business, beating Oklahoma State 69-3.
This week: at Northwestern Wildcats (1-1)
Georgia Bulldogs (2-0)
It wasn’t the most impressive performance, but Georgia defeated Austin Peay 28-6. They stay undefeated and are the favorites by sportsbooks to win the SEC.
This week: at Tennessee Volunteers (2-0)
TCU Horned Frogs (1-0)
After defeating UNC in week 1, TCU had week 2 off.
This week: Abilene Christian Wildcats (FCS) (1-1)
Tulane Green Wave (AAC) (2-0)
Last week, Tulane beat Northwestern. This week, they won a close one at South Alabama.
This week: vs. Duke Blue Devils (1-1)
Ohio Bobcats (MAC) (1-1)
Ohio lost in week 1 to Rutgers, but defeated West Virginia in week 2.
This week: at Ohio State Buckeyes (2-0)
James Madison (Sun Belt) (1-1)
James Madison looked good against Louisville, but lost progress late and lost the game.
This week: BYE
UNLV Rebels (MWC) (3-0)
UNLV defeated a power conference team in UCLA this week. After playing in week 0, they are one of the only 3-0 teams in the country.
This week: BYE
Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (2-1)
Western Kentucky lost to Toledo in week 2, but already have two wins under their belts.
This week: BYE
