College Football Playoff Bracketology: September 28

Each week, teams will be fighting for position in an effort to make the College Football Playoff. The teams will be ranked each week, but what matters most is who they have played and defeated already on the field. Here is College Football Playoff Preseason Bracketology: September 28.

Note: This will be updated following each week of games during the season. During the season more notes about the notable wins, losses and schedule will be included for each team.

1. Ohio State Buckeyes (4-0)*

Ohio State came off their bye week ready to play against Washington, winning 24-6. The Huskies were undefeated and should’ve been ranked, but the Buckeyes also still have their win over Texas helping them get the top spot.

This week: vs. Minnesota Golden Gophers (3-1)

2. Miami Hurricanes (4-0)*

Miami was off this week, but the win over Notre Dame looks better after they throttled Arkansas. The Hurricanes have also defeated Florida and USF, giving them a great case to stay in the top two this week.

This week: at Florida State Seminoles (3-1)

3. Oregon Ducks (5-0)

Oregon had the lead for most of the game, gave it up late, but won it in overtime over Penn State on the road in a great win. They have looked the part of a great team, but now have a big win to back them up.

This week: BYE

4. Ole Miss Rebels (5-0)*

Ole Miss defended their home turf to beat LSU 24-19. The Rebels have three SEC wins so far, but this one is the most impressive and vaults them up the rankings.

This week: BYE

First Round Hosts

5. Oklahoma Sooners (4-0)

Oklahoma was off this weekend, but starting quarterback John Mateer had surgery on his hand and will miss some time. The wins over Auburn and Michigan still really help their case for the CFP if they can hang on without Mateer.

This week: vs. Texas Longhorns (3-0) (Game in Dallas, Texas)

6. Indiana Hoosiers (5-0)

Following their big win over Illinois, Indiana went on the road to defeat a solid Iowa team. While it wasn’t as pretty, Indiana looks like they could make back-to-back CFPs.

This week: BYE

7. Texas Tech Red Raiders (4-0)*

Texas Tech didn’t have a game this week, but are still the frontrunners in the Big 12 after manhandling Utah in week 4.

This week: at Houston Cougars (4-0)

8. Texas A&M Aggies (4-0)

It wasn’t the cleanest game for Texas A&M, but they defeated Auburn for their first SEC win. The win over Notre Dame looks better after the Fighting Irish blew out Arkansas this weekend.

This week: vs. Mississippi State Bulldogs (4-1)

Last Four In

9. Vanderbilt Commodores (5-0)

Vanderbilt started slowly against Utah State, but ended up pulling away. They are 5-0 with a win over South Carolina pulling some weight for them.

This week: at Alabama Crimson Tide (3-1)

10. Missouri Tigers (5-0)

Missouri stayed undefeated with a win over UMass, but also has wins over Kansas and South Carolina this season. The Tigers can run the ball well and could move into the projected field next week.

This week: BYE

11. Iowa State Cyclones (5-0)

Iowa State moved to 5-0 with a 39-14 win over Arizona in week 5. The Cyclones have three power conference wins, which boosts their case to be in the CFP for now.

This week: at Cincinnati Bearcats (3-1)

12. Memphis Tigers (5-0)*

Memphis dominated Florida Atlantic 55-26, which keeps them undefeated. Their win over Arkansas and undefeated record puts them in a good spot to receive the group of five spot in the CFP if they can keep it up.

This week: vs. Tulsa Golden Hurricane (2-3)

First Four Out

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (5-0)

It took overtime, but Georgia Tech defeated Wake Forest. The Yellow Jackets have three power conference wins, although their win over Clemson doesn’t look as good as when it occurred.

This week: BYE

Florida State Seminoles (3-1)

Florida State lost to Virginia on Friday night. The Seminoles still have a great win over Alabama under their belts, so they will get some consideration if they win more games.

This week: vs. Miami Hurricanes (4-0)

Alabama Crimson Tide (3-1)

Alabama lost to Florida State in week 1, but have looked great since. That includes this week, when they beat Georgia on the road.

This week: vs. Vanderbilt Commodores (5-0)

Georgia Bulldogs (3-1)

Georgia lost a close game to Alabama at home. The win over Tennessee still holds some good weight for them, but they have work to do to get back into the field.

This week: vs. Kentucky Wildcats (2-2)

First Four Out- Group of Five Slot

North Texas Mean Green (5-0) (AAC)

North Texas has a good offense that keeps them winning games. They defeated South Alabama by 14 in week 5.

This week: BYE

UNLV Rebels (4-0) (MWC)

UNLV didn’t have a game in week 5, but are undefeated so far and should be good competition in the MWC.

This week: at Wyoming Cowboys (2-2)

James Madison Dukes (3-1) (Sun Belt)

James Madison defeated Georgia Southern 35-10 and still look like the class of the Sun Belt.

This week: at Georgia State Panthers (1-3)

Ohio Bobcats (3-2) (MAC)

Ohio won their first MAC Game of the season by beating Bowling Green, 35-20. The Bobcats had some good performances against power conference teams, inlcuding a win over West Virginia.

This week: at Ball State Cardinals (1-3)
