College Football Playoff Bracketology September 27

Each week, teams will be fighting for position in an effort to make the College Football Playoff. The teams will be ranked each week, but what matters most is who they have played and defeated already on the field. Here is College Football Playoff Preseason Bracketology: September 27.

Note: This will be updated following each week of games during the season.

First Round Byes

1. Texas Longhorns (4-0)*

Texas moves up to the first spot in the rankings after defeating a tough Tennessee team on the road. Pairing that with their win over Ohio State and they will likely keep the top spot until they lose.

This week: BYE

2. Georgia Bulldogs (4-0)

Georgia dominated Oklahoma the whole way through for their best win of the season. The Bulldogs pass the eye test and continue to breeze right through teams.

This week: vs. Vanderbilt Commodores (3-1)

3. Florida Gators (4-0)

Florida continues to put up a lot of points and this time it aided them in beating Ole Miss 52-28. The Gators have this win and also a road victory over Auburn to move them up the rankings this week.

This week: at Missouri Tigers (3-1)

4. Mississippi State Bulldogs (4-0)

The Bulldogs have now defeated a ranked Missouri team to add to their list of quality wins. They also have wins over Minnesota and South Carolina for a great start to the season. The schedule is brutal coming up, but they have earned the No. 4 spot.

This week: vs. Alabama Crimson Tide (4-0)

First Round Hosts

5. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (4-0)

Notre Dame notched a win over Purdue to move to 4-0. They still haven’t defeated a great team, but their victory over Wisconsin does look a lot better after the Badgers went to Penn State and knocked off the Nittany Lions.

This week: at North Carolina Tar Heels (2-1)

6. Miami Hurricanes (4-0)*

The Hurricanes breezed through Central Michigan in Week 4. While they still don’t have a marquee win, they look like one of the best teams in the country. They do have a win over Wake Forest, who just knocked off Louisville, which does make things look better.

This week: at Clemson Tigers (3-1)

7. Alabama Crimson Tide (4-0)

Alabama had no issues defeating South Carolina, as they won 49-18. They have defeated three power conference teams: Kentucky, Florida State and now South Carolina. Keelon Russell seems to be coming along well, which could raise the ceiling for this team.

This week: at Mississippi State Bulldogs (4-0)

8. Iowa Hawkeyes (4-0)*

Iowa needed some heroics, but they defeated Michigan in the Big House. The Hawkeyes also have a win over their in-state rival Cyclones so far this season.

This week: vs. Ohio State Buckeyes (3-1)

Last Four In

9. Texas Tech Red Raiders (4-0)*

The Red Raiders defeated Sam Houston State in week 4. The thing bolstering their case in these rankings is their win over Houston and the Texas Tech still look like the frontrunners in the Big 12.

This week: at Colorado Buffaloes (2-2)

10. Indiana Hoosiers (4-0)

The Hoosiers won a close one on Friday night against Northwestern. This is Indiana’s best win so far this season, as they still have a lot to prove.

This week: at Rutgers Scarlet Knights (1-3)

11. UCLA Bruins (4-0)

UCLA dominated Maryland on the road 54-3. They have also defeated California, San Diego State and Purdue for a nice start to the season. Things get harder down the stretch, but the Bruins look like they can compete in the Big Ten this season.

This week: BYE

12. UMass Minutemen (4-0)*

UMass continues to stack wins, as they defeated Sacramento State 35-6. Their win over Rutgers bolsters their case to get the Group of Six spot in the CFP, as none of the other contenders are both undefeated and have a power conference win.

This week: vs. Eastern Michigan Eagles (2-3)

First Four Out

Utah Utes (4-0)

Utah defeated Iowa State on the road this week, which pairs well with their win over Arkansas. They still have plenty of tough Big 12 games, but the Utes have started out well this year.

This week: BYE

BYU Cougars (3-0)

BYU didn’t play in Week 4, but they already have a win in the Big 12 over Arizona. The Cougars came close to making the CFP last season and look like they will be in the mix again this year.

This week: at TCU Horned Frogs (2-2)

Duke Blue Devils (4-0)

Duke has defeated Tulane, Illinois and Stanford early in the season. This week they defeated William & Mary, which won’t move the needle much, but other teams lost. With their two power conference wins, the Blue Devils are playing much better than expected this season.

This week: BYE

Pittsburgh Panthers (4-0)

Pittsburgh defeated Bucknell this week. Their bigger wins this season are over Miami (Ohio), UCF and Syracuse. With two power conference wins, they can improve thier stock with a win over Virginia Tech this week.

This week: at Virginia Tech Hokies (4-0)

First Four Out-Group of Six Spot

North Dakota State Bison (4-0)*

North Dakota State didn’t have a game in week 4, but with Tulsa losing, they take the last spot in the field. They have adjusted to FBS football well and currently look like a threat to win the Mountain West in their first season in the conference.

This week: vs. Wyoming Cowboys (2-2)

USF Bulls (4-0)

USF defeated Bowling Green on the road this week. They also have wins over Delaware State, Army and FIU this year. The American schedule will be tough, but the Bulls have played well to start Brian Hartline’s first season.

This week: vs. Temple Owls (1-3)

James Madison Dukes (4-0)

James Madison won 46-20 over Old Dominion this week. They are undefeated and also have some nice wins over Liberty and San Diego State.

This week: vs. Marshall Thundering Herd (3-1)

Boise State Broncos (3-1)

Boise State defeated another contender for the Group of Six spot in the CFP by winning 32-7 over Western Michigan. They also have a nice win over Memphis. Their lone loss is to Oregon on the road. With time, Boise State should continue to rise up these rankings if they keep winning.

This week: vs. Utah State Aggies (1-3)
