Each week teams will be fighting for position in an effort to make the College Football Playoff. The teams will be ranked each week, but what matters most is who they have played and beaten already on the field. Preseason rankings will not be taken into consideration here. Here is College Football Playoff Bracketology September 26.
1. Alabama Crimson Tide (4-0)
Southern Miss was no challenge for the Crimson Tide, who moved to 4-0 on the season. Their resume is still boosted by their wins over Miami and Florida, and they’ll have another chance to prove they are the best team in the country when they play Ole Miss this weekend.
This week: vs. Ole Miss Rebels (3-0)
2. Georgia Bulldogs (4-0)
There wasn’t a more dominating conference game than Georgia defeating Vanderbilt 62-0. Georgia certainly looks like one of the best teams in the country, even if their win over Clemson holds a little less weight after the Tigers lost their second game of the season. The Bulldogs have a big matchup against Arkansas this week.
This week: vs. Arkansas Razorbacks (4-0)
3. Oregon Ducks (4-0)
Oregon won’t get many style points for beating Arizona, but they do still have that good road win over Ohio State. The Ducks won’t have too many more big games left this season, so they have to keep winning.
This week: at Stanford Cardinals ( )
4. Arkansas Razorbacks (4-0)
The Razorbacks are exceeding preseason expectations, as they have defeated Texas and now Texas A&M this season. Their defense is tough and they have some talented skill position players. Arkansas will continue to be tested in the coming weeks.
This week: at Georgia Bulldogs (4-0)
5. Iowa Hawkeyes (4-0)
Although they trailed early, the Hawkeyes bounced back to defeat Colorado State in week 4. Pair this win with the wins over Indiana and Iowa State and Iowa has a solid resume. They also have a decently manageable schedule the rest of the year.
This week: at Maryalnd Terrapins (4-0)
6. Penn State Nittany Lions (4-0)
A win over Villanova doesn’t mean much, other than avoiding a loss, but Penn State stayed unbeaten in week 4. The Nittany Lions wins over Auburn and Wisconsin look a little worse now after both teams have lost again, but Penn State still deserves to be ranked highly until they lose.
This week: vs. Indiana Hoosiers (2-2)
7. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (4-0)
After winning, but not impressing over the last few weeks, Notre Dame was able to take the lead and pull away in the fourth quarter to beat Wisconsin 41-13. The Fighting Irish are undefeated, have a decent win over Wisconsin and still have a bunch of problems to fix going forward. They do look like they have improved as the season has progressed.
This week: vs. Cincinnati Bearcats (3-0)
8. BYU Cougars (4-0)
BYU had their first game against a team that isn’t a member of the Pac-12. They defeated USF, who has struggled this season. BYU stayed undefeated and with how crazy this season has already been, may stay highly ranked for a while.
This week: at Utah State Aggies (3-1)
9. Cincinnati Bearcats (3-0)
Cincinnati was off in week 4, but they still look like the group of five team best suited for a run at the College Football Playoff. They have played sloppy football, but have defeated Indiana, along with some blowouts against Murray State and Miami Ohio. The Bearcats will have a chance to prove themselves this week.
This week: at Notre Dame Fighting Irish (4-0)
10. Ole Miss Rebels (3-0)
Ole Miss had a bye week heading into their big game against Alabama this week. The Rebels have looked good so far with wins over Louisville and Tulane, but still have yet to be tested by a great team. That changes this weekend.
This week: at Alabama Crimson Tide (4-0)
11. Oklahoma Sooners (4-0)
The Sooners keep winning, but it doesn’t look good. A late field goal helped them beat West Virginia. Oklahoma is having trouble consistently running the ball and Spencer Rattler does not look like he did at the end of last season. Other polls will have them rated higher because of their preseason ranking, but they really aren’t playing up to that standard right now.
This week: at Kansas State Wildcats (3-1)
12. Baylor Bears (4-0)
Baylor defeated a ranked Iowa State team to stay undefeated. Before that, they hadn’t won a game against a team worth noting. It will be hard to stay undefeated, even if the Bears have started off hot.
This week: at Oklahoma State Cowboys (4-0)
