College Football Playoff Bracketology: September 21

Each week, teams will be fighting for position in an effort to make the College Football Playoff. The teams will be ranked each week, but what matters most is who they have played and defeated already on the field. Here is College Football Playoff Preseason Bracketology: September 21.

Note: This will be updated following each week of games during the season. During the season more notes about the notable wins, losses and schedule will be included for each team.

First Round Byes

1. Miami Hurricanes (4-0)*

With their win over Florida, Miami has defeated three solid teams this season. They have also notched wins over Notre Dame and USF, both of which were ranked when they played.

This week: BYE

2. Ohio State Buckeyes (3-0)*

Ohio State was off this week, but they still have their big win over Texas from week 1. They’ll be tested more down the stretch, but that big win is still enough to keep them ranked highly.

This week: at Washington Huskies (3-0)

3. Florida State Seminoles (3-0)

Florida State had no issues with Kent State, but quarterback Thomas Castellanos was banged up. Their win over Alabama continues to look great, as the Crimson Tide have played well since.

This week: at Virginia Cavaliers (3-1)

4. LSU Tigers (4-0)*

LSU was not tested by Southeastern Louisiana in week 4. Their win against Clemson looks worse now, but the Tigers are still among the betting favorites to take it home. The offense has been sloppy, but if they find their rythm, they can be dangerous.

This week: at Ole Miss Rebels (4-0)

First Round Hosts

5. Georgia Bulldogs (3-0)

Georgia didn’t have a game this weekend, but their win over Tennessee was one of the best games of the season. They have played around against lesser competition, but stepped up when needed.

This week: Alabama Crimson Tide (2-1)

6. Oklahoma Sooners (4-0)

Oklahoma hosted a ranked Auburn team and took care of business again. Their win over Michigan improved this week, as the Wolverines defeated Nebraska.

This week: BYE

7. Indiana Hoosiers (4-0)

Indiana dominated a top-10 Illinois team in week 4. It was their first challenge of the season and they passed with flying colors.

This week: at Iowa Hawkeyes (3-1)

8. Texas Tech Red Raiders (4-0)*

Even after losing starting quarterback Behren Morton to injury, Texas Tech was able to secure a victory over Utah on the road. They are the Big 12 favorites at this point in the season.

This week: BYE

Last Four In

9. Vanderbilt Commodores (4-0)

Vanderbilt avenged a loss from last season against Georgia State. They have wins over two power conference teams this season, which deserves recognition.

This week: vs. Utah State Aggies (3-1)

10. Texas A&M Aggies (3-0)

The Aggies were off this week, but are upheld by their win over Notre Dame. The offense looks a lot better and should help the Aggies in the SEC this season.

This week: vs. Auburn Tigers (3-1)

11. Mississippi State Bulldogs (4-0)

After a slow start, Mississippi State revved things up to defeat Northern Illinois. Their defeat of Arizona State is bolstering them right now.

This week: vs. Tennessee Volunteers (3-1)

12. Memphis Tigers (4-0)*

Memphis forced a late turnover to defeat Arkansas and now should be the group of five representative with an undefeated record and a win over a power five team.

This week: at Florida Atlantic Owls (1-2)

First Four Out

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (4-0)

Georgia Tech’s win over Clemson looks worse, but they took care of business against Temple this week. They fall from the top 12, but still have plenty of time to catch bak up.

This week: at Wake Forest Demon Deacons (2-1)

Iowa State Cyclones (4-0)

Iowa State was off this week, but are 4-0 due to playing in week 0. Beating Iowa helps them and they are undefeated still, which is more than a lot of teams can say.

This week: vs. Arizona Wildcats (3-0)

Oregon Ducks (4-0)

Oregon has looked like the most impressive team in the country, but still haven’t been tested. Beating Oregon State this week is nice, but they will really be tested in week 5.

This week: at Penn State Nittany Lions (4-0)

Penn State Nittany Lions (4-0)

Penn State hasn’t played anyone of note, but they have talent and are still undefeated.

This week: vs. Oregon Ducks (4-0)

First Four Out- Group of Five Slot

Tulane Green Wave (American) (3-1)

Tulane took a big loss to Ole Miss in week 4, but it looks like the winner of the American Conference should be in contention for a spot in the CFP.

This week: at Tulsa Golden Hurricane (2-2)

UNLV Rebels (MWC) (4-0)

UNLV was down early at Miami (Ohio), but were able to come back for the win. They are undefeated and currently look like they could win the MWC.

This week: BYE

James Madison Dukes (Sun Belt) (2-1)

The Dukes didn’t play in week 4 and their only loss of the season was to Louisville. It is still a good bet that they could win the Sun Belt.

This week: vs. Georgia Southern Eagles (2-2)

Ohio Bobcats (MAC) (2-2)

Ohio defeated Gardner-Webb in week 4. Their two losses are to Ohio State and Rutgers, but their win over West Virginia can give them some confidence heading into MAC play.

This week: vs. Bowling Green Falcons (2-2)
