College Football Playoff Bracketology September 20

Each week, teams will be fighting for position in an effort to make the College Football Playoff. The teams will be ranked each week, but what matters most is who they have played and defeated already on the field. Here is College Football Playoff Preseason Bracketology: September 20.

Note: This will be updated following each week of games during the season.

First Round Byes

1. Ole Miss Rebels (3-0)*

Ole Miss notched their revenge over Lane Kiffin by holding on to their eight-point lead late in the game. The win over the Tigers, paired with their win over Louisville, which also looks better after this weekend, gives Ole Miss the best collection of wins.

This week: at Florida Gators (3-0)

2. Texas Longhorns (3-0)

Texas didn’t play their best game, but they won easily against UTSA in week 3. The Longhorns have a great win over Ohio State, which might be the best win of the season so far.

This week: at Tennessee Volunteers (3-0)

3. Georgia Bulldogs (3-0)

Georgia blew out Arkansas in week 3 on the road. It is an SEC win, but Arkansas looks like they won’t win too many more games this season. The Bulldogs don’t have a marquee win, but they sure seem like they are on a mission to destroy every team they play.

This week: vs. Oklahoma Sooners (2-1)

4. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (3-0)

Notre Dame pulled away in the second half against Michigan State in week 3. The Fighting Irish have now defeated two Big Ten teams, including Wisconsin. They look like they are primed to compete this season.

This week: at Purdue Boilermakers (1-2)

First Round Hosts

5. Miami Hurricanes (3-0)*

The Hurricanes defeated Wake Forest by 13 this week. They don’t have a big win yet and likely won’t get that chance for several weeks, but they are humming right now.

This week: vs. Central Michigan Chippewas (2-1)

6. Texas Tech Red Raiders (3-0)*

Texas Tech got a ranked win over Houston in week 3. They have a quarterback issue right now that needs to be figured out, but the Cougars got a big win and are still frontrunners in the Big 12.

This week: vs. Sam Houston State Bearkats (1-2)

7. Indiana Hoosiers (3-0)*

Indiana has been blowing out their easy nonconference schedule, although it took them a while this week against Western Kentucky. They will not get a chance to notch a big win in the next couple of weeks.

This week: vs. Northwestern Wildcats (2-0)

8. Alabama Crimson Tide (3-0)

After some weather delays, Alabama put up a lot of points to get past Florida State. Their win over Kentucky looks better after the Wildcats knocked off Texas A&M this week.

This week: vs. South Carolina Gamecocks (2-1)

Last Four In

9. Mississippi State Bulldogs (3-0)

Mississippi State went on the road and defeated South Carolina. That pairs well with their win on the road over Minnesota. Kamario Taylor looks like a star and their wins have earned them a spot in the rankings.

This week: vs. Missouri Tigers (3-0)

10. Florida Gators (3-0)

Florida had their first test of the season on the road at Auburn and the Gators passed. The Gators will have a big home test at Ole Miss that could really solidify their spot in the rankings if they can win.

This week: Ole Miss Rebels (3-0)

11. USC Trojans (4-0)

USC didn’t win comfortably on their cross-country road trip over Rutgers, but they did get the win. They don’t have a big win yet, but will have a chance over the next few games.

This week: vs. Oregon Ducks (2-1)

12. Tulsa Golden Hurricane (3-0)*

This week, Tulsa defeated East Texas A&M. Their case to be on the list is bolstered by their week 1 win over Oklahoma State. The Cowboys have since knocked off Oregon while winning two straight.

This week: at Arkansas Razorbacks (1-2)

First Four Out

UCLA Bruins (3-0)

UCLA now has put together three solid wins. They opened the season by beating Cal, then defeated SDSU before getting a win over Purdue this week. The Bruins look a lot better under Bob Chesney.

This week: at Maryland Terrapins

Tennessee Volunteers (3-0)

Tennessee defeated Kennesaw State this week, but won’t get any brownie points for that. They do get some for beating Georgia Tech on the road in week 2.

This week: vs. Texas Longhorns (3-0)

West Virginia Mountaineers (3-0)

West Virginia got a ranked win over UVA this week for a notable result. They keep the ball on the ground and it has worked so far this season for Rich Rodriguez.

This week: vs. Oklahoma State Cowboys

Michigan Wolverines (3-0)

Michigan looked shaky against UTEP but were able to control the game late. They also nearly lost to Western Michigan, but do have a ranked win over Oklahoma and are undefeated.

This week: vs. Iowa Hawkeyes (3-0)

First Four Out- Group of Six Spot

North Dakota State Bison (4-0)

In their first season of FBS football, North Dakota has started 4-0. This week, they defeated Sacramento State on the road.

This week: BYE

UMass Minutemen (3-0)

UMass has the win over Rutgers and has stayed undefeated since against FCS competition. They are the only undefeated team left in the MAC and their power conference win gets them some consideration.

This week: at Sacramento State Hornets (1-3)

USF Bulls (3-0)

Brian Hartline moved to 3-0 in his debut season as a head coach. Their best win so far is over Army, but more tests are coming later in the season.

This week: at Bowling Green Falcons (0-3)

James Madison Dukes (3-0)

James Madison went across the country and defeated SDSU this week. The Dukes are 3-0 and look like they could win the Sun Belt after having three coaches over the last four seasons.

This week: at Old Dominion Monarchs (1-2)
