Each week teams will be fighting for position in an effort to make the College Football Playoff. The teams will be ranked each week, but what matters most is who they have played and beaten already on the field. Preseason rankings will not be taken into consideration here. Here is College Football Playoff Bracketology September 18.
CFP Four
1. Alabama Crimson Tide (3-0)
While it didn’t go as easily as many expected, Alabama walked away from Gainesville with another win. With wins over Florida and Miami, who now has two losses, the Crimson Tide have to feel good about their start. Nick Saban will have some things to fix in the coming weeks, but for now, Alabama looks like the best team in the country.
This week: vs. Southern Miss Golden Eagles (1-2)
2. Georgia Bulldogs (3-0)
It was an easy win for Georgia over South Carolina, as the final score was 40-13. The Bulldogs’ case to the CFP committee is still bolstered by their big win over Clemson, but they do look very good right now as well. Their matchup with Florida at the end of October will be crucial.
This week: at Vanderbilt Commodores (1-2)
3. Oregon Ducks (3-0)
A win over Stony Brook won’t do much for the Ducks, but they took care of business. Their win over Fresno State looks much better now after they were able to knock off UCLA and they still have the big victory over Ohio State from last week. With the rest of the Pac-12 struggling though, Oregon may lack opportunities for big wins down the stretch.
This week: vs. Arizona Wildcats (1-2)
4. Iowa Hawkeyes (3-0)
After having a close game with Kent State in the first quarter, Iowa pulled away and won 30-7. Their wins over Indiana and Iowa State are a nice pair and they look poised for big things in the Big Ten West this season.
This week: vs. Colorado State Rams (1-2)
First Four Out
5. Penn State Nittany Lions (3-0)
Penn State has won two really good games so far. After beating Wisconsin in week 1, they were able to beat Auburn at home. The defense looks good and Sean Clifford played his best game at quarterback for the Nittany Lions. With Ohio State looking shaky, Penn State might be able to beat them out in the Big Ten East.
This week: vs. Villanova Wildcats (FCS 3-0)
6. Arkansas Razorbacks (3-0)
The Razorbacks weren’t expected to look this good, but they end week 3 with three wins. They rolled over Georgia Southern 45-10 a week after winning against Texas. Arkansas looks like they could cause some trouble in the SEC West.
This week: vs. Texas A&M Aggies (3-0)
7. BYU Cougars (3-0)
After three weeks, BYU is 3-0 against the Pac-12. While the Pac-12 does not look good outside of Oregon, BYU won their challenge with three straight wins over teams from a power conference. The latest addition to their win collection is Arizona State who was ranked 19th going into the game.
This week: vs. USF Bulls (1-2)
8. Cincinnati Bearcats (3-0)
Cincinnati looked sloppy in the first half against Indiana, but were able to turn the tide and win 38-24. It was their first decent win of the season and they likely needed to play a little better to impress the CFP Committee. They do have another chance to impress them after a bye week when they travel to Notre Dame.
This week: BYE
Next Four Out
9. Oklahoma Sooners (3-0)
Although they haven’t been playing as smoothly as they usually do, Oklahoma is still winning games. This week they defeated Nebraska in a rematch of “The Game of the Century”. They’ll need to play better and beat better teams to really move up these rankings.
This week: vs. West Virginia Mountaineers (2-1)
10. Ole Miss Rebels (3-0)
Not only did Ole Miss get another nice win, this time against a Tulane team that gave Oklahoma fits, but their win against Louisville also looks better. The Cardinals defeated UCF on Friday night. The Rebels are one of the many SEC West teams to be in these rankings before they match up against each other.
This week: BYE
11. Texas A&M Aggies (3-0)
Texas A&M does not look good overall this season, but they are undefeated. Backup quarterback Zach Calzada was able to lead the Aggies to their best performance of the season, a 34-0 win. The Aggies will be tested with their backup quarterback in these next few weeks.
This week: at Arkansas Razorbacks (3-0)
12. Michigan State Spartans (3-0)
Mel Tucker led his team into Miami and walked away with a win over a ranked Hurricanes’ team. How good Miami actually is can be debated, but Michigan State looks much improved over last season. There is a decent chance they are 7-0 by the time they face Michigan.
This week: vs. Nebraska Cornhuskers (2-2)
