Each week teams will be fighting for position in an effort to make the College Football Playoff. The teams will be ranked each week, but what matters most is who they have played and defeated already on the field. Here is College Football Playoff Preseason Bracketology: September 15.
Note: This will be updated following each week of games during the season.
First Round Byes
1. Texas Longhorns (3-0)
Texas had no issues with UTSA this week, defeating them handily. Starting quarterback Quinn Ewers left the game with an injury, but the backup Arch Manning picked up right where he left off. They have looked good in all three games to get the number one spot.
This week: vs. UL Monroe Warhawks (2-0)
2. Ohio State Buckeyes (2-0)
Ohio State was off in week 3. They looked good against Akron and Western Michigan in their first two weeks. The Buckeyes are still the favorite in the Big Ten.
This week: vs. Marshall Thundering Herd (1-1)
3. Utah Utes (3-0)
Utah struggled early with Utah State, but pulled away late. They were without their starting quarterback Cam Rising, but still notched the impressive rivalry win.
This week: at Oklahoma State Cowboys (3-0)
4. Miami Hurricanes (3-0)
Miami defeated Ball State in week 3. Their resume took a hit as Florida lost again, but Miami still looks like the class of the ACC.
This week: at USF Bulls (2-1)
First Round Hosts
5. Georgia Bulldogs (3-0)
Georgia had a close game with Kentucky and narrowly escaped. They have a tougher schedule than Texas and the Longhorns have made things go more smoothly at this point in the season, which is why they drop to the at-large spot.
This week: BYE
6. Tennessee Volunteers (3-0)
Tennessee demolished Kent State 71-0. They are rolling over the competition, which includes their week 2 win over NC State. The Volunteers are passing the eye test and have a notable win already.
This week: at Oklahoma Sooners (3-0)
7. USC Trojans (2-0)
The Trojans were off in week 3. Their win over LSU still bolsters their case for the CFP and they have a win over Utah State as well.
This week: at Michigan Wolverines (2-1)
8. Alabama Crimson Tide (3-0)
Alabama struggled against USF in week 2, but dominated Wisconsin on the road in week 3. The Crimson Tide look like they are starting to figure things out under new head coach Kalen DeBoer.
This week: BYE
Last Four In
9. Ole Miss Rebels (3-0)
Ole Miss has destroyed any team in their way. This week was their toughest test yet, as they were on the road at Wake Forest. They didn’t play their best, but still won easily. Ole Miss can start moving up the rankings as they continue to play tougher games.
This week: vs. Georgia Southern Eagles (2-1)
10. Oregon Ducks (3-0)
The Ducks looked sloppy in their first two games of the season, but got things together in week 3. They defeated Oregon State 49-14.
This week: BYE
11. Missouri Tigers (3-0)
Missouri hosted a ranked Boston College team and were able to win by six. It was the first notable win of the season for the Tigers after having a successful 2023 season.
This week: vs. Vanderbilt Commodores (2-1)
12. UNLV Rebels (3-0)
UNLV bolstered their case to be the group of five representatives in the CFP. They notched a second win over a power four opponent by beating Kansas. The Rebels also have a win over Houston. If they win the MWC, they could be the last team in the CFP.
This week: BYE
First Four Out- At-Large
Penn State Nittany Lions (2-0)
Penn State didn’t play in week 3. Their win over West Virginia took a hit after the Mountaineers lost to Pitt. They still have a lot in front of them, but for now are on the outside looking in.
This week: vs. Kent State Golden Flashes (0-3)
Kansas State Wildcats (3-0)
After defeating Tulane in week 2, Kansas State earned a ranked win on Friday night against Arizona. The Wildcats are in play for the auto-bid for winning their conference, but also aren’t far off from an at-large spot.
This week: at BYU Cougars (3-0)
Oklahoma State Cowboys (3-0)
Mike Gundy’s squad took care of business against Tulsa this week. They still need to prove themselves against some better competition, but that opportunity is coming this week.
This week: vs. Utah Utes (3-0)
Iowa State Cyclones (2-0)
Iowa State was off in week 3. They have a nice win over Iowa aiding their case in these rankings.
This week: vs. Arkansas State (2-1)
First Four Out- Group of Five Spot
Boise State Broncos (1-1)
Boise State didn’t play in week 3. They defeated Georgia Southern and put up a good fight against Oregon. UNLV and Boise State could be in a fight in the MWC.
This week: vs. Portland State Vikings (0-2)
USF Bulls (2-1)
USF had some struggles early, but then pulled away from Southern Miss. They played Alabama tough in week 2 and will need to gear up for another power four matchup this week.
This week: vs. Miami Hurricanes (3-0)
Northern Illinois Huskies (2-0)
Northern Illinois had a bye in week 3. This follows up their huge upset of Notre Dame on the road.
This week: vs. Buffalo Bulls (2-0)
Memphis Tigers (3-0)
Memphis went on the road and beat Florida State. That isn’t exactly the greatest win anymore, but it is a power four win. The Tigers could win the American and get the last auto-bid in the CFP.
This week: at Navy Midshipmen (2-0)
