College Football Playoff Bracketology: September 14

Each week, teams will be fighting for position in an effort to make the College Football Playoff. The teams will be ranked each week, but what matters most is who they have played and defeated already on the field. Here is College Football Playoff Preseason Bracketology: September 14.

Note: This will be updated following each week of games during the season. During the season more notes about the notable wins, losses and schedule will be included for each team.

First Round Byes

1. Ohio State Buckeyes (3-0)*

Ohio State struggled with Ohio in week 3, but were able to pull away to win easily. Their win over Texas in week 1 looks worse, as the Longhorns are winning but struggling, but the Buckeyes stay in the top spot as plenty of teams are struggling early in the season.

This week: BYE

2. LSU Tigers (3-0)*

It wasn’t the prettiest win, but LSU moved to 3-0 with a 20-10 win over Florida. Their win over Clemson took a step down after the Tigers lost to Georgia Tech, but the Tigers still get credit for the road win at Clemson too.

This week: vs. Southeast Louisiana Lions (FCS) (2-1)

3. Miami Hurricanes (3-0)*

Miami dominated a ranked USF team to win 49-12. Their win over Notre Dame lost some luster, as the Fighting Irish lost to Texas A&M this week, but the Hurricanes sure look the part of a top three team in the country.

This week: vs. Florida Gators (1-2)

4. Florida State Seminoles (2-0)

The Seminoles were off in week 3, but the win over Alabama continues to look better as the Crimson Tide improve week to week.

This week: vs. Kent State Golden Flashes (1-2)

First Round Hosts

5. Georgia Bulldogs (3-0)

Georgia had a rollercoaster game against Tennessee, but were able to win in overtime on the road. While the other wins this season aren’t the greatest, this win really helps boost them in the rankings.

This week: BYE

6. Mississippi State Bulldogs (3-0)

Mississippi State followed their upset victory over Arizona State with a win over Alcorn State. That won’t move the needle, but if the Sun Devils can continue to rebound, it will be a great win to have under their belts.

This week: vs. Northern Illinois Huskies (1-1)

7. Oklahoma Sooners (3-0)

The Sooners were on the road at Temple and won 42-3. The win over Michigan bolsters their ranking, but they are also playing well when a lot of other teams aren’t.

This week: vs. Auburn Tigers (3-0)

8. Vanderbilt Commodores (3-0)

Vanderbilt went on the road and dominated South Carolina for their first big win of the season. The ranked win is the only one of note right now, but they will be tested more soon.

This week: vs. Georgia State Panthers (1-2)

Last Four In

8. Texas A&M Aggies (3-0)

Beating an 0-2 team doesn’t always help a case to be in the CFP, but it was a good win on the road for Texas A&M. Their other wins won’t do much, but the Aggies are in a good spot for the future.

This week: BYE

9. Tulane Green Wave (3-0)*

Tulane defeated Duke this weekend to get their second power conference win of the season. They have one more power conference game coming up, but right now, they are in the driver’s seat for the group of five spot in the CFP.

This week: at Tulsa Golden Hurricane (1-2)

10. Iowa State Cyclones (4-0)*

The Cyclones struggled against Arkansas State on the road, but were able to come away from the win. They don’t have marquee wins yet, but two power conference wins and an undefeated record has them in the rankings.

This week: BYE

12. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (3-0)

It was a gritty game, but Georgia Tech scored late to defeat Clemson 24-21. With the Tigers losing two games already, it isn’t the best win, but the Yellow Jackets already have another power conference win over Colorado as well.

This week: vs. Temple Owls (2-1)

First Four Out

Illinois Fighting Illini (3-0)

Illinois had no problems beating Western Michigan. While their win over Duke looks worse, the Fighting Illini make the rankings ahead of a big game this week.

This week: at Indiana Hoosiers (3-0)

Utah Utes (3-0)

Utah defeated Wyoming on the road in week 3. They also have wins over Cal Poly and UCLA, but have a chance to get in the top 12 again after this week.

This week: vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders (3-0)

Oregon Ducks (3-0)

Oregon went on the road and earned a win over Northwestern. The Ducks have looked good, but simply haven’t played top-tier competition yet.

This week: vs. Oregon State Beavers (0-3)

Penn State Nittany Lions (3-0)

Penn State is another team that hasn’t played tough competition yet, but they won easily over Villanova after a slow start.

This week: BYE

First Four Out- Group of Five Slot

USF Bulls (2-1) (AAC)

The loss to Miami, moves USF out of the top 12, but if they win out, there is a good chance they could be in the CFP with their wins over Boise and Florida leading the win.

This week: vs. South Carolina State Bulldogs (FCS) (2-1)

UNLV Rebels (3-0) (MWC)

UNLV was off this week, but still have a power conference win over UCLA helping their case for the CFP.

This week: at Miami (Ohio) RedHawks (0-2)

James Madison Dukes (1-1) (Sun Belt)

The Dukes were off this week after losing to Louisville last week. They still look like they have enough juice to win the Sun Belt this season.

This week: at Liberty Flames (1-2)

Ohio Bobcats (MAC) (1-2)

The two power conference losses to Rutgers and Ohio State may not hurt after the Bobcats defeated West Virginia in week 2.

This week: vs. Gardner Webb Bulldogs (FCS) (2-1)
