Each week teams will be fighting for position in an effort to make the College Football Playoff. The teams will be ranked each week, but what matters most is who they have played and defeated already on the field. Here is College Football Playoff Preseason Bracketology: October 6.
Note: This will be updated following each week of games during the season
1. Texas Longhorns (5-0)
Texas moves up to the top spot after not playing this weekend. Alabama getting upset puts Texas in good position to be the number one seed for a while. The Longhorns’ win over Michigan looks worse now, but they have looked good themselves and other teams have lost games.
This week: vs. Oklahoma Sooners (4-1) (Game in Dallas, TX)
2. Ohio State Buckeyes (5-0)
The Buckeyes had another slow start, but they righted the ship and defeated Iowa 35-7. While the schedule hasn’t really tested them yet, they look like one of the two best teams in the country.
This week: at Oregon Ducks (5-0)
3. Miami Hurricanes (6-0)
Miami had a great comeback to defeat Cal on the road. They have had some close calls, but are still undefeated and look like they can win the ACC. Clemson looks good themselves, so if the Hurricanes want to keep the automatic bid spot, they’ll have to play more cleanly moving forward.
This week: BYE
4. BYU Cougars (5-0)
BYU didn’t have a game this week, but they keep the last bye spot. They are undefeated with a nice win over Kansas State bolstering their case to the CFP Committee. Tougher games are ahead, but for now it looks like the Big 12 is wide open and that BYU could win it.
This week: vs. Arizona Wildcats (3-2)
5. Oregon Ducks (5-0)
The Ducks defeated Michigan State on Friday night. They haven’t played up to their potential this season, but with other teams losing and Oregon staying undefeated, they move up to the fifth spot in the rankings.
This week: vs. Ohio State Buckeyes (3-0)
6. Penn State Nittany Lions (5-0)
Penn State is another team that moves up mostly because other teams lost. They took care of business this week against UCLA, but didn’t play their cleanest game in week 6.
This week: at USC Trojans (3-2)
7. Georgia Bulldogs (4-1)
Georgia defeated Auburn this week, even though they looked sloppy for a lot of the game. They are ranked ahead of a team they lost to last week because Alabama lost to an unranked team.
This week: vs. Mississippi State Bulldogs (1-4)
8. Alabama Crimson Tide (4-1)
Alabama was stunned on the road at Vanderbilt. It was a bad loss and the Crimson Tide defense specifically was vulnerable. The loss moves them down the rankings, but the win over Georgia still helps them keep a spot in the top 12.
This week: vs. South Carolina Gamecocks (3-2)
9. Iowa State Cyclones (5-0)
Iowa State stayed undefeated this week by defeating Baylor by a wide margin. The Cyclones look like they can compete for the Big 12, but they still have a bulk of their tough games at the end of the season.
This week: at West Virginia Mountaineers (3-2)
10. Clemson Tigers (4-1)
Clemson lost to Georgia in week 1, but have taken care of business since. Their offense looks much improved, which should help them down the stretch.
This week: at Wake Forest Demon Deacons (2-3)
11. Tennessee Volunteers (4-1)
Tennessee had a great start to the season, but stumbled to an unranked Arkansas team this week. Their win over NC State looks worse, but they did look good against Oklahoma as well.
This week: vs. Florida Gators (3-2)
12. Boise State Broncos (4-1)
Boise had no issues with Utah State and Ashton Jeanty was pulled early yet again. The Broncos only have lost to Oregon this season, putting them in a good spot to take the fifth-automatic qualifying spot in the CFP if they take care of business.
This week: at Hawaii Warriors (2-3)
Ole Miss Rebels (4-1)
Ole Miss lost to Kentucky last week, but defeated South Carolina in week 6 despite not playing their best. They need to build back up their resume to get into the top 12.
This week: at LSU Tigers (4-1)
Utah Utes (4-1)
Utah didn’t play in week 6, but holds their spot outside the CFP. They will be hoping to get starting quarterback Cam Rising back soon. Their loss to Arizona looks worse, but they are still in good position in the Big 12.
This week: at Arizona State Sun Devils (4-1)
Kansas State Wildcats (4-1)
Kansas State is another team that had a bye in week 6, but they also stay in the first four out category. Their win over Arizona took a hit this week as they lost to Texas Tech.
This week: at Colorado Buffaloes (4-1)
Indiana Hoosiers (6-0)
Curt Cignetti has done a terrific job early in his Indiana tenure, getting them to bowl eligibility in just six weeks. They defeated Northwestern this week. While the Hoosiers don’t have marquee wins yet, staying undefeated puts them in the mix for now.
This week: BYE
UNLV Rebels (4-1)
UNLV lost a thriller to Syracues in overtime. They are still 2-1 against power four teams this season, putting them in a good spot to make the CFP if they take care of business.
This week: at Utah State Aggies (1-4)
Navy Midshipmen (5-0)
Navy defeated Air Force 34-7 this week to stay unbeaten. They have a nice win over Memphis to keep themselves in consideration for the group of five spot in the CFP.
This week: vs. Charlotte 49ers (3-3)
Army Black Knights (5-0)
Army hasn’t had the toughest schedule so far, but they are blowing teams out. That continued this week, as they beat Tulsa 49-7.
This week: vs. UAB Blazers (1-4)
Liberty Flames (4-0)
Liberty went undefeated in the regular season last year and are off to a good start this year. They didn’t play this week. While the Flames don’t have a tough schedule, winning out gives them a shot to make the CFP.
This week: vs. FIU Panthers (2-3)
