Each week, teams will be fighting for position in an effort to make the College Football Playoff. The teams will be ranked each week, but what matters most is who they have played and defeated already on the field. Here is College Football Playoff Preseason Bracketology: October 5.
Note: This will be updated following each week of games during the season. During the season more notes about the notable wins, losses and schedule will be included for each team.
1. Miami Hurricanes (5-0)*
Miami continues to roll this season, as they defeated Florida State on the road. With their wins over Notre Dame, USF, Florida and Florida State, it is hard to find a team with a better collection of wins so far this season.
This week: BYE
2. Ohio State Buckeyes (5-0)*
Ohio State dominated Minnesota, winning 42-3 this week. Their win over Texas doesn’t look quite as good, but Ohio State passes the eye test and their defense still hasn’t allowed more than nine points in a game this season.
This week: at Illinois Fighting Illini (5-1)
3. Oregon Ducks (5-0)
Oregon was on a bye this week and their win at Penn State doesn’t look great anymore. They are undefeated, look the part and have three power conference wins this season.
This week: vs. Indiana Hoosiers (5-0)
4. Ole Miss Rebels (5-0)*
Ole Miss didn’t play in week 6, but retain a top ranking. They have wins over four power conference schools and the defense has cleaned things up from earlier in the year, which should help them make a run at the CFP.
This week: vs. Washington State Cougars (3-2)
5. Oklahoma Sooners (5-0)
Oklahoma was without starting quarterback John Mateer, but had no issues defeateing Kent State, winning 44-0. They have good wins over Michigan and Auburn, but will have some key games coming up without Mateer.
This week: vs. Texas Longhorns (3-2) (Game in Dallas,TX)
6. Indiana Hoosiers (5-0)
Indiana didn’t play in week 6, but stay in the sixth spot in the rankings. They have good wins over Illinois and Iowa, with the Illinois win really showing their dominance.
This week: at Oregon Ducks (5-0)
7. Texas A&M Aggies (5-0)
Texas A&M notched a win over Mississippi State. They have three big wins over power conference teams, winning games over Notre Dame, Auburn and Mississippi State so far.
This week: vs. Florida Gators (2-3)
8. Texas Tech Red Raiders (5-0)*
Texas Tech defeated Houston, 35-11 this week. With two wins on the road in the Big 12 and one of them being over Utah, Texas Tech is the clear favorite to win the conference.
This week: vs. Kansas Jayhawks (4-2)
9. Missouri Tigers (5-0)
Missouri didn’t have a game this week, but move up in the rankings with other teams losing. They are undefeated with two power conference wins, but have a chance to prove themselves over the next few weeks.
This week: vs. Alabama Crimson Tide (4-1)
10. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (5-0)
Georgia Tech was off in week 6 and move into the rankings again with other teams struggling. Georgia Tech wins some games in ugly fashion, but they are undefeated with three power conference wins this season.
This week: vs. Virginia Tech Hokies (2-4)
11. Alabama Crimson Tide (4-1)
The Crimson Tide have gotten things back on the right track. They defeated Georgia last week and then handled a ranked Vanderbilt this season.
This week: at Missouri Tigers (5-0)
12. Memphis Tigers (6-0)*
Memphis is one of the few teams in the country that is already bowl-eligible at 6-0. They have a win over Arkansas, which going along with their undefeated record, puts them in the group of five spot in the CFP.
This week: BYE
Georgia Bulldogs (4-1)
Georgia defeated Kentucky by a large margin this week. Their only loss is to Alabama, which sets them up well for a run down the stretch.
This week: at Auburn Tigers (3-2)
Vanderbilt Commodores (5-1)
Vanderbilt played Alabama close on the road. They have a brutal schedule ahead and will need a week of rest to prepare.
This week: BYE
LSU Tigers (4-1)
LSU was off this week, which was needed after losing to Ole Miss in week 5. They have to fix a lot of things offensively, but their wins against Clemson and Florida look a bit better this week.
This week: vs. South Carolina Gamecocks (3-2)
BYU Cougars (5-0)
BYU stayed undefeated with a win over West Virginia on Friday night. They still don’t have a marquee win, but have three victories over power conference teams.
This week: at Arizona Wildcats (4-1)
North Texas Mean Green (5-0) (AAC)
North Texas was off this week and stay in the first four out. They are one of the many contenders for the CFP in AAC.
This week: USF Bulls (4-1)
UNLV Rebels (5-0) (MWC)
UNLV defeated Wyoming on the road 31-17. They are still undefeated and are one of a few teams vying for the MWC crown.
This week: vs. Air Force Falcons (1-4)
James Madison Dukes (4-1) (Sun Belt)
James Madison won a close game against Georgia State, winning 14-7. They are long shots for the CFP, but are the frontrunners in the Sun Belt.
This week: vs. Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns (2-3)
Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (5-1) (C-USA)
Western Kentucky defeated Delaware this week to move to 5-1. They likely won’t make the CFP, but look like a good bet to make the C-USA Championship Game.
This week: BYE
