College Football Playoff Bracketology: October 26

Each week, teams will be fighting for position in an effort to make the College Football Playoff. The teams will be ranked each week, but what matters most is who they have played and defeated already on the field. Here is College Football Playoff Preseason Bracketology: October 26.

Note: This will be updated following each week of games during the season. During the season more notes about the notable wins, losses and schedule will be included for each team.

First Round Byes

1. Ohio State Buckeyes (7-0)*

Ohio State had a bye this week, but retains the top spot after passing the eye test and being undefeated this late into the season.

This week: vs. Penn State Nittany Lions (3-4)

2. Indiana Hoosiers (8-0)

Indiana picked up a big win over UCLA this week, which just adds to their great season. The win over Oregon is still one of the more impressive of the year.

This week: at Maryland Terrapins (4-3)

3. Texas A&M Aggies (8-0)*

The Aggies had a close first half against LSU, but pulled away in the second half. They are undefeated with several decent wins boosting their case for ranking this high in the CFP.

This week: BYE

4. Alabama Crimson Tide (7-1)

Alabama went on the road and needed some heroics to beat South Carolina. On the bright side, they’ve lost these types of games before. Since their loss to Florida State, Alabama has been the best one-loss team in the country with wins over Vanderbilt, Missouri, Tennessee and Georgia.

This week: BYE

First Round Hosts

5. Georgia Bulldogs (6-1)

Georgia didn’t have a game in week 9, but stay at no. 5. They have some solid wins against Tennessee and Ole Miss boosting their CFP case, but they need to keep winning if they want a first round bye.

This week: vs. Florida Gators (3-4)

6. Ole Miss Rebels (7-1)

After losing to Georgia last week, Ole Miss rebounded well to beat Oklahoma on the road in a thriller. They don’t have many other great wins, but Ole Miss has handled the schedule well and now has a path to finish the season strong and make the CFP.

This week: vs. South Carolina Gamecocks (3-5)

7. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (8-0)*

Georgia Tech defeated Syracuse 41-16 this season. They don’t have a marquee win, with Duke being their best victory, but they are looking like they could make the ACC Championship.

This week: at NC State Wolfpack (4-4)

8. BYU Cougars (8-0)*

BYU scored 14 fourth quarter points to defeat Iowa State on the road 41-27. They remain undefeated and have some huge Big 12 games in the next several weeks in their way of making the conference championship game.

This week: BYE

Last Four In

9. Vanderbilt Commodores (7-1)

The Commodores won a close game against Missouri, clearing a path to finish the season strong and possibly make the CFP. Their only loss is to Alabama and will be favored in most of their games down the stretch.

This week: at Texas Longhorns (6-2)

10. Miami Hurricanes (6-1)

Miami started slow against Stanford, but started piling things on late to get the win. Their win over Notre Dame keeps looking better, which will really help their case to move up the rankings if they keep winning.

This week: at SMU Mustangs (5-3)

11. Oregon Ducks (7-1) 

Oregon has won two straight since losing to Indiana. They don’t have a great win, with their best coming over Northwestern. They still look the part of a CFP team, but will need to keep winning to prove it.

This week: BYE

12. Navy Midshipmen (7-0)*

Navy is still undefeated after defeating Florida Atlantic this week. They have had some close games, but they continue to win. They have a gauntlet of a schedule to finish the season, but for now, their undefeated record gives them the last spot.

This week: at North Texas Mean Green (7-1)

First Four Out

Texas Tech Red Raiders (7-1)

Texas Tech dominated Oklahoma State, which is what they were projected to do. Their best wins are agaisnt Utah and Houston, which were both on the road. There is a good chance they can make the Big 12 Championship Game, but an at-large spot may also be in play.

This week: at Kansas State Wildcats (4-4)

Notre Dame Fighting Irish (5-2)

Notre Dame didn’t play this week, but stay in a good position to win out and make the CFP. They lost their first two games of the season to teams that are currently projected to be in the field and have been on a roll ever since.

This week: at Boston College Eagles (1-7)

Louisville Cardinals (6-1)

The Cardinals notched a victory over Boston College this week. Their win over Miami really helps them and the ACC schedule down the stretch isn’t too daunting.

This week: at Virginia Tech Hokies (3-5)

Cincinnati Bearcats (7-1)

The Bearcats had a lead, then let the game get close before pulling away from Baylor. Cincinnati lost their season opener to Nebraska, but their offense has led them to seven-straight wins since. They will have a few tough games down the stretch to really make their case for the CFP.

This week: at Utah Utes (6-2)

First Four Out-Group of Five Slot

Tulane Green Wave (AAC) (6-1)

Tulane was off this week, but look like they could make a run towards the AAC Championship. The winner of that game will likely make the CFP. The Green Wave have only lost to Ole Miss this season and have a good win over Northwestern.

This week: at UTSA Roadrunners (3-4)

James Madison Dukes (Sun Belt) (6-1)

The Dukes were off this week, but stay right behind AAC teams to make the CFP. They have only lost to Louisville, but are hoping for absolute chaos in the AAC for any chance of making the CFP.

This week: at Texas State Bobcats (3-4)

Boise State Broncos (MWC) (6-2)

The losses to South Florida and Notre Dame make the CFP a very distant dream for now. They have taken care of the rest of their schedule, including defeating Nevada 24-3.

This week: vs. Fresno State Bulldogs (5-3)

Kennesaw State Owls (C-USA) (5-2)

Kennesaw State dominated Florida Interinational on the road this week. Their only losses are to Wake Forest and Indiana. While they won’t make the CFP, it is a great season for the Owls.

This week: vs. UTEP Miners (2-5)
