Each week teams will be fighting for position in an effort to make the College Football Playoff. The teams will be ranked each week, but what matters most is who they have played and beaten already on the field. Preseason rankings will not be taken into consideration here. Here is College Football Playoff Bracketology October 17.
CFP Four
1. Georgia Bulldogs (7-0)
Georgia not only passed their latest test, but they did so in a dominating fashion, beating an undefeated Kentucky team 30-13. They have defeated Clemson, Arkansas, Auburn and Kentucky for solid wins on the season.
This week: BYE
2. Cincinnati Bearcats (6-0)
A group of five team ranked this highly? Cincinnati has had some help from other teams losing to rank this highly, but they have also earned this ranking. This week they breezed past UCF 56-21, picking up style points along the way. Their road wins over Indiana and Notre Dame are still bolstering their case to make the CFP, but the Bearcats still have to hope for some more help to get that far, as the CFP Committee has routinely ranked group of five teams lower than the initial polls.
This week: at Navy Midshipmen (1-5)
3. Oklahoma Sooners (7-0)
Oklahoma looks like a different team with Caleb Williams under center. They notched a win over TCU 52-31 this weekend to extend their record to 7-0. Their defense still needs to step it up, but if the offense stays this successful, they will be in the CFP.
This week: at Kansas Jayhawks (1-5)
4. Oklahoma State Cowboys (6-0)
In week 7, the Cowboys were able to get a ranked win over Texas. They haven’t won games by a lot, but Oklahoma State keeps finding ways to win. They have wins over Texas, Baylor and Kansas State, who were all ranked at the time of them playing. The Cowboys could make things interesting in the Big 12.
This week: at Iowa State Cyclones (4-2)
Next Four Out
5. Alabama Crimson Tide (6-1)
Nick Saban helped the team rebound and get a big win over Mississippi State. The loss to Texas A&M gives them a slim to no margin for error. Their wins against Florida and Miami don’t look as good as they originally did, but the Crimson Tide do have a nice win over Ole Miss.
This week: vs. Tennessee Volunteers (4-3)
6. Michigan Wolverines (6-0)
Michigan was off in week 7. The Wolverines don’t have impressive wins this season, but they are still undefeated, which is a credit to them after how crazy the season has been. It will be tough to keep winning in the Big Ten East, but if they do, they’ll be in play for the CFP.
This week: vs. Northwestern Wildcats (3-3)
7. Michigan State Spartans (7-0)
It was ugly, but Michigan State got a road win over Indiana to keep their unblemished record. The Spartans, like other teams in these rankings, will have some tough games in the Big Ten East coming up, where they will have to really prove their worth.
This week: BYE
8. Ohio State Buckeyes (5-1)
The Buckeyes were off in week 7, but move up via other teams losing and not playing well. Their loss to Oregon holds them back, but with Ohio State heading in the right direction and Oregon looking really sloppy the last few weeks, the Buckeyes should jump them in the rankings. In the end, it will all play out in the next few weeks for both teams.
This week: at Indiana Hoosiers (2-4)
Next Four Out
9. Oregon Ducks (5-1)
Oregon won’t be passing the eye test for many people as of late. They defeated Cal 24-17 this weekend, but that won’t impress the CFP Committee much. Their win over Ohio State is completely bolstering their resume. With the Pac-12 being down, the Ducks need to win out to make the CFP and may need some help in addition to that.
This week: at UCLA Bruins (5-2)
10. Ole Miss Rebels (5-1)
The storyline from the Ole Miss-Tennessee game is how the Volunteer fans reacted to Lane Kiffin returning, but what matters going forward is that Ole Miss won the game. They have some decent wins on the season and only have a loss to Alabama. The Rebels are cheering for an Alabama loss so they have a chance to make the SEC Championship Game and really bolster their resume.
This week: vs. LSU Tigers (4-3)
11. Iowa Hawkeyes (6-1)
Iowa struggled to force turnovers or stop the Purdue offense and paid for it. They lost their first game of the season 24-7. It may not be a bad loss when all is said and done, as the Boilermakers are 4-2, but the Hawkeyes need to win out for any shot at the CFP.
This week: BYE
12. Kentucky Wildcats (6-1)
There is no shame in losing to Georgia. The Wildcats made mistakes and unfortunately when playing against that defense, that can’t happen. The Wildcats have still had a solid season and have the capability to win a lot more football games this season.
This week: BYE
