Each week, teams will be fighting for position in an effort to make the College Football Playoff. The teams will be ranked each week, but what matters most is who they have played and defeated already on the field. Here is College Football Playoff Preseason Bracketology: October 12.
Note: This will be updated following each week of games during the season. During the season more notes about the notable wins, losses and schedule will be included for each team.
1. Ohio State Buckeyes (6-0)*
Ohio State didn’t have many problems beating Illinois on the road. This pairs well with their wins over Washington and Texas, with the latter looking better after the Longhorns got a win over Oklahoma this week. The results pair with a great eye test to give Ohio State the top spot.
This week: at Wisconsin Badgers (2-4)
2. Miami Hurricanes (5-0)*
Miami didn’t play in week 7, but still has a nice collection of wins. They defeated USF, Florida and Florida State already this season, which is a good collection of wins.
This week: vs. Louisville Cardinals (4-1)
3. Indiana Hoosiers (6-0)
Indiana notched one of the best wins of the college football seasons by defeating Oregon on the road. After not drawing much attention in nonconference play, the Hoosiers have looked good in Big Ten play, which includes them dominating Illinois and sneaking by Iowa.
This week: vs. Michigan State Spartans (3-3)
4. Texas A&M Aggies (6-0)*
Texas A&M handled business well against Florida, winning 34-17. They are undefeated with a nice win over Notre Dame under their belts. They have some tough games down the stretch, but it is a manageable schedule down the stretch.
This week: at Arkansas Razorbacks (2-4)
5. Ole Miss Rebels (6-0)*
Ole Miss didn’t look good against Washington State, but they were able to sneak away with a win. They need to play better moving forward, but so far they are undefeated with a nice win over LSU.
This week: at Georgia Bulldogs (5-1)
6. Texas Tech Red Raiders (6-0)*
Texas Tech dominated Kansas to pick up their sixth win of the season. They have defeated Utah and the rest of their schedule doesn’t look the toughest, but the Red Raiders are playing really well.
This week: at Arizona State Sun Devils ()
7. Alabama Crimson Tide (5-1)
Alabama picked up a big road win over Missouri this week. The Crimson Tide has been on a roll since their week 1 loss to Florida State, with wins over Georgia, Vanderbilt and now Missouri.
This week: vs. Tennessee Volunteers (5-1)
8. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (6-0)
The Yellow Jackets defeated Virginia Tech in week 7 to stay undefeated. While they lack a big win, Georgia Tech just keeps grinding out wins.
This week: at Duke Blue Devils (4-2)
9. Georgia Bulldogs (5-1)
Georgia played a tough game on the road against Auburn and were able to pull away late to win 20-10. The Bulldogs lost to Georgia and still have some issues to clean up, but are in the field. They have a chance to improve their ranking against Ole Miss.
This week: vs. Ole Miss Rebels (5-0)
10. LSU Tigers (5-1)
LSU didn’t play their best, but they defeated South Carolina 20-10. The only loss on the season came to Ole Miss and the Tigershave a chance to boost their case for the CFP this week.
This week: at Vanderbilt Commodores (5-1)
11. BYU Cougars (6-0)
BYU won a double overtime game against Arizona to stay undefeated this season. They lack a big win, but being an undefeated power conference team at this point of the season gets them the last at-large spot in the field.
This week: vs. Utah Utes (5-1)
12. Memphis Tigers (6-0)
Memphis was off this week, but are undefeated with a win over Arkansas helping their case. Winning the American will be tough, as the conference has several players for the CFP.
This week: at UAB Blazers (2-4)
Oregon Ducks (5-1)
Oregon lost to Indiana this week and didn’t play well. They are still a live threat to make the field and their schedule could help, as the Ducks don’t play a currently ranked team the rest of the way.
This week: at Rutgers Scarlet Knights (3-3)
Tennessee Volunteers (5-1)
Tennessee was able to beat Arkansas in week 7. The Volunteers only have one loss, which was to Georgia, who is currently in the projected field. A game against Alabama could really help them.
This week: at Alabama Crimson Tide (5-1)
Vanderbilt Commodores (5-1)
Vanderbilt had the week off after their loss to Alabama. The week will help them prepare for a brutal schedule down the stretch.
This week: vs. LSU Tigers (5-1)
Oklahoma Sooners (5-1)
Oklahoma’s offense didn’t look functional with an injured John Mateer and they lost to Texas. They still have a few solid wins to keep them in the running, but they will have to win some tough games to stay in contention for the CFP.
This week: at South Carolina Gamecocks (3-3)
USF Bulls (5-1) (AC)
USF dominated North Texas, who was undefeated entering the week. It is another big win for USF’s case and winning the AAC without any more losses likely will help them make the field.
This week: vs. Florida Atlantic Owls (3-3)
UNLV Rebels (6-0) (MWC)
UNLV stayed undefeated by winning a shootout against Air Force, 51-48. The Rebels have a win over UCLA, which is starting to look better as the Bruins start winning games.
This week: at Boise State Broncos (4-2)
James Madison Dukes (5-1) (Sun Belt)
James Madison defeated Louisiana by 10 to extend their record to 5-1. Their only loss is to Louisville and still have hopes of a CFP berth, even if they are slimmer than other teams on the list.
This week: vs. Old Dominion Monarchs (4-2)
Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (5-1) (C-USA)
Western Kentucky didn’t play in week 7. They currently sit atop the C-USA with a 3-0 conference record.
This week: vs. Florida International Panthers (2-3)
