Each week, teams will be fighting for position in an effort to make the College Football Playoff. The teams will be ranked each week, but what matters most is who they have played and defeated already on the field. Here is College Football Playoff Preseason Bracketology: October 11.
Note: This will be updated following each week of games during the season.
1. Georgia Bulldogs (6-0)*
Georgia got one of the biggest wins of the year by defeating Alabama on the road. With Texas losing and the big win, they are the logical choice to sit atop the bracket.
This week: vs. Auburn Tigers (3-2)
2. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (6-0)
Notre Dame dominated Stanford this week, winning 58-7. They still don’t have a great win, with their best being against a 4-1 Wisconsin team. The Fighting Irish look like one of the best teams in the country, though and will be tested this week.
This week: at BYU Cougars (5-0)
3. Miami Hurricanes (6-0)*
The Hurricanes did not play in Week 6. Much like Notre Dame, they have dominated competition. Their most notable win was a 33-20 victory over a 5-1 Wake Forest team.
This week: at Florida State Seminoles (3-3)
4. Indiana Hoosiers (6-0)*
It didn’t look pretty, but Indiana won on the road against an undefeated Nebraska team. The Hoosiers haven’t lost, but have had some close games against the Cornhuskers and Northwestern.
This week: vs. Ohio State Buckeyes (5-1)
5. UCLA Bruins (5-0)
UCLA won a close one against Oregon 17-15 this week. Bob Chesney has kept the Bruins undefeated and now have a notable win, even if Oregon isn’t exactly what most expected them to be this season.
This week: vs. Wisconsin Badgers (4-1)
6. Texas Longhorns (4-1)
The Longhorns made too many mistakes and dropped a game to Oklahoma. Winning likely would have kept them in the top spot, but losing to a Sooners team that already has two losses this season drops them a bit in the rankings.
This week: vs. Florida Gators (4-2)
7. Ohio State Buckeyes (5-1)
Ohio State had no issues defeating Maryland in Week 6. Their only loss was a one-point defeat to Texas on the road and they have a nice win over Iowa helping their case.
This week: at Indiana Hoosiers (6-0)
8. Alabama Crimson Tide (5-1)
Alabama lost a close one to Georgia, which proves they can play with the best in the country, even if they do drop in these rankings. They still have some tough games, but are in a good spot to go on a run and make the CFP.
This week: at Tennessee Volunteers (5-1)
9. Texas Tech Red Raiders (5-0)*
The Red Raiders were off in Week 6 after winning five straight games to start the season. They haven’t always made things look easy, but the undefeated record gives them a shot near the top of the Big 12.
This week: vs. Arizona State Sun Devils
10. BYU Cougars (5-0)
BYU won on Friday night over Iowa State, 24-10. The Cougars’ star running back LJ Martin is out for a month with an injury, but the undefeated record keeps them in the rankings before their big showdown with Notre Dame.
This week: vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (6-0)
11. Utah Utes (5-0)
Utah has an interesting offense and it has helped them stay undefeated through five games. They don’t have a great win, but have been dominating a lot of teams.
This week: at Colorado Buffaloes (2-3)
12. Boise State Broncos (5-1)*
Boise won a tough road game against Fresno State, 38-31. The Broncos lost to Oregon in Week 1, but have had some nice wins since. Their wins over Memphis, Western Michigan and Fresno State put them in a good spot to be the group of six representatives in the CFP.
This week: BYE
Ole Miss Rebels (4-1)
Ole Miss recovered after losing to Florida in Week 5 by destroying Vanderbilt in Week 6. The defense still has some issues that can be exploited, but they are still in the mix to make the CFP if they can keep it together.
This week: vs. Missouri Tigers (5-1)
Mississippi State Bulldogs (4-1)
The Bulldogs didn’t play this week, with their last result being a loss to Alabama. The win over Missouri is really helping them so far, but they have a tough schedule coming up.
This week: at LSU Tigers (4-2)
Missouri Tigers (5-1)
Missouri had no problems with Texas A&M, winning 27-6 in Week 6. Their win over Florida doesn’t seem as impressive after the Gators lost again, but the Tigers are in the mix.
This week: at Ole Miss Rebels (5-1)
Kentucky Wildcats (5-1)
Kentucky defeated LSU in overtime this week to really put themselves in consideration. They also have wins over Texas A&M and South Carolina to help their case.
This week: at Oklahoma Sooners (3-2)
James Madison Dukes (6-0)
The Dukes won a close one at Georgia Southern to stay undefeated. They are the only undefeated group of six team, so they are in consideration for the last spot, even if Boise State holds the spot for now.
This week: vs. Georgia State Panthers (4-1)
New Mexico Lobos (4-1)
New Mexico didn’t play in Week 6, but they have looked good this season. All of their wins have been blowouts and their lone loss was an eight-point defeat on the road to Oklahoma.
This week: at Hawai’i Rainbow Warriors (1-5)
Memphis Tigers (5-1)
The Tigers won big over UAB this week. Their only loss is to Boise State, so they’ll likely need help even if they win out.
This week: at Tulane Green Wave (2-3)
North Dakota State Bison (5-1)
North Dakota State lost to UNLV for their first loss as an FBS team. While the loss moves them down this list, they still have a chance to make things interesting down the stretch.
This week: vs. Nevada Wolf Pack (2-3)
