Each week, teams will be fighting for position in an effort to make the College Football Playoff. The teams will be ranked each week, but what matters most is who they have played and defeated already on the field. Here is College Football Playoff Preseason Bracketology: November 30.
Note: This will be updated following each week of games during the season. During the season more notes about the notable wins, losses and schedule will be included for each team.
1. Ohio State Buckeyes (12-0)*
Ohio State finished the perfect regular season by beating Michigan, which also helped them release some demons. They are likely staying in the no. 1 spot this week heading into the conference championships.
This week: vs. Indiana Hoosiers (12-0) (Game in Indianapolis)
2. Indiana Hoosiers (12-0)
Indiana destroyed Purdue in rivalry week, completing one of two undefeated regular seasons in the sport this year. They have set up a 1 v. 2 matchup against Ohio State.
This week: vs. Ohio State Buckeyes (12-0) (Game in Indianapolis)
3. Georgia Bulldogs (11-1)*
Georgia defeated Georgia Tech and moves up with Texas A&M losing to Texas. They are headed to the SEC Championship. With their only loss being to Alabama, Georgia should move up to no. 3.
This week: vs. Alabama Crimson Tide (10-2) (Game in Atlanta)
4. Texas Tech Red Raiders (11-1)*
Texas Tech moves up more because of Texas A&M’s loss than their win, but they do get some style points for destroying West Virginia.
This week: vs. BYU Cougars (11-1) (Game in Arlington)
5. Texas A&M Aggies (11-1)
The Aggies lost to Texas and fall out of getting a bye. Their win over Notre Dame is pulling a lot of weight for their case to be this high, as the SEC schedule wasn’t too tough.
This week: BYE
6. Oregon Ducks (11-1)
Oregon defeated Washington in their last regular-season game. Their only loss is to Indiana, but they lack a huge win, with their best being over USC.
This week: BYE
7. Ole Miss Rebels (11-1)
The Ole Miss coaching drama may impact this ranking, but they beat Mississippi State and deserve to be ranked seventh at the least.
This week: BYE
8. Oklahoma Sooners (10-2)
Oklahoma defeated LSU in a game that was in the balance until the end. The Sooners faced a tough schedule and should be ranked in the field after how they have been ranked recently by the committee.
This week: BYE
9. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (10-2)
Notre Dame had no issues getting by Stanford this week. The Fighting Irish have been ranked this high before by the committee, so they likely will be again unless there is massive change in their minds.
This week: BYE
10. Alabama Crimson Tide (10-2)
Alabama won a close game against Auburn to finish with 10 regular season wins. They should be in the CFP based on last week’s ranking and the fact that the committee mentioned last season that they didn’t want to penalize teams who made their conference championship games.
This week: vs. Georgia Bulldogs (11-1) (Game in Atlanta)
11. Virginia Cavaliers (10-2)*
Virginia defeated Virginia Tech in rivalry week. They are the highest-ranked team in the ACC Championship Game, as they are playing a five-loss Duke team.
This week: vs. Duke Blue Devils (7-5) (Game in Charlotte)
12. Tulane Green Wave (10-2)*
Tulane defeated Charlotte to seal their spot in the American Conference Championship Game. They only have losses to Ole Miss and UTSA with some decent wins as well, giving them the nod currently ast the highest-ranked group of five team.
This week: vs. North Texas Mean Green (11-1)
BYU Cougars (11-1)
BYU has just one loss this season. The win over UCF in week 14, likely won’t move the needle for the CFP Committee, even if it should.
This week: vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders (11-1)
Miami Hurricanes (10-2)
Miami defeated Pittsburgh for a solid win regarding their CFP case. They have the head-to-head win over Notre Dame, but the committee would have to jump them pretty significantly to fit them into the field.
This week: BYE
Utah Utes (10-2)
Utah defeated Kansas, but it likely won’t be enough to get into the CFP.
This week: BYE
Vanderbilt Commodores (10-2)
Vanderbilt had an impressive win over Tennessee, but it will likely not be enough to get them to jump into the CFP.
This week: BYE
James Madison Dukes (Sun Belt) (11-1)
James Madison dismantled Coastal Carolina for their regular-season finale. The Dukes have only lost to Louisville and will be in consideration if they win the Sun Belt Championship. Even if Tulane gets in, there is a chance that Duke defeats Virginia in the ACC Championship Game and two group of five teams get in.
This week: vs. Troy Trojans (Game in Harrisonburg)
North Texas Mean Green (American) (11-1)
North Texas finished up their regular season with a win over Temple. They have just one loss, to USF, and beating Tulane could get them into the CFP.
