College Football Playoff Bracketology: November 23

Each week, teams will be fighting for position in an effort to make the College Football Playoff. The teams will be ranked each week, but what matters most is who they have played and defeated already on the field. Here is College Football Playoff Preseason Bracketology: November 23.

Note: This will be updated following each week of games during the season. During the season more notes about the notable wins, losses and schedule will be included for each team.

First Round Byes

1. Ohio State Buckeyes (11-0)*

Ohio State didn’t have any issues with Rutgers. They have been ranked no. 1 for most of the season and that won’t change this week.

This week: at Michigan Wolverines (9-2)

2. Indiana Hoosiers (11-0)

The Hoosiers did not play this week, but should not move down the rankings. The CFP Committee seems to be ok with Ohio State and Indiana settling things on the field if they both make the Big Ten Championship Game.

This week: at Purdue Boilermakers (2-9)

3. Texas A&M Aggies (11-0)*

Texas A&M defeated Samford, which won’t help their case for the CFP. They are likely going to stay at no. 3 in the rankings this week.

This week: at Texas Longhorns (8-3)

4. Georgia Bulldogs (10-1)

Georgia played Charlotte and won easily, which helps them stay locked in at the no. 4 spot in the rankings.

This week: vs. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (9-2) (Game in Atlanta, Georgia)

First Round Hosts

5. Texas Tech Red Raiders (10-1)*

Texas Tech was another team on bye this week. With not many upsets, they should stay at no. 5 in the rankings.

This week: at West Virginia Mountaineers (4-7)

6. Ole Miss Rebels (10-1)

Ole Miss didn’t play and have been preparing for the Egg Bowl. One more win locks them into the CFP.

This week: at Mississippi State Bulldogs (5-6)

7. Oregon Ducks (9-1)

Oregon had a good win over USC this week, which gives them their best victory of the season. They could move up in the rankings with the win, but the committee hasn’t made many bold moves this season since the initial rankings have come out.

This week: at Washington Huskies (8-3)

8. Oklahoma Sooners (9-2)

The Sooners defeated Missouri by 11 for a solid win. They may have two losses, but a win this week locks up a spot in the CFP.

This week: vs. LSU Tigers (7-5)

Last Four In

9. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (9-2)

Notre Dame dominated Syracuse and picked up a lot of style points in the process. There is a lot of argument about Notre Dame, but they likely aren’t going to move down this week.

This week: at Stanford Cardinal (4-7)

10. Alabama Crimson Tide (9-2)

Alabama played Eastern Illinois and won 56-0, in a game that won’t bolster their case much. Their resume could move them a spot higher, but the committee is valuing good losses over wins this season.

This week: at Auburn Tigers (5-6)

11. Virginia Cavaliers (9-2)*

Virginia is in the driver’s seat to have the ACC spot in the CFP after Georgia Tech lost to Pittsburgh. If they win this week they are in the ACC Championship Game and have tiebreakers to help them if they lose.

This week: vs. Virginia Tech Hokies (3-8)

12. Tulane Green Wave (9-2)*

Tulane was ranked as the highest group of five team last week and defeated Temple this week to hold the last spot in the CFP.

This week: vs. Charlotte 49ers (1-10)

First Four Out

BYU Cougars (10-1)

BYU defeated a tough Cincinnati team to take them one step closer to the Big 12 Championship Game.

This week: vs. UCF Knights (5-6)

Utah Utes (9-2) 

The Utes had a comeback win over Kansas State to keep their slim CFP hopes alive. They’ll need some help down the stretch though.

This week: at Kansas Jayhawks (5-6)

Miami Hurricanes (9-2)

Miami had a close one against Virginia Tech, but they pulled away late. The win keeps them alive, but they won’t be going to the ACC Championship Game most likely. They have to hope the committee values their head to head win over Notre Dame.

This week: at Pittsburgh Panthers (8-3)

Vanderbilt Commodores (9-2)

Vanderbilt played a great game against a Kentucky team that was on a roll. They stay alive in the CFP race, but need to win this week and get some help.

This week: at Tennessee Volunteers (8-3)

First Four Out- Group of Five

James Madison Dukes (Sun Belt) (10-1)

James Madison had a close call against Washington State, but got the win. They are hoping to win out and get a Tulane loss to make the CFP. Even that may not be enough because the committee seems impressed with the American Conference.

This week: at Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (6-5)

North Texas Mean Green (American) (10-1)

North Texas defeated Rice this week and can make the CFP if they are able to win the American Conference Championship Game, which would give them a good win.

This week: Temple Owls (5-6)

Navy Midshipmen (American) (8-2)

Navy still needs some help to make the championship game, but it is possible. Winning this week is the first step.

This week: at Memphis Tigers (8-3)

San Diego State Aztecs (MWC) (9-2)

San Diego State defeated San Jose State 25-3 this week. They are likely the only MWC team with a chance to make the CFP, but it is a very slim chance.

This week: at New Mexico Lobos (8-3)
