College Football Playoff Bracketology: November 16

Each week, teams will be fighting for position in an effort to make the College Football Playoff. The teams will be ranked each week, but what matters most is who they have played and defeated already on the field. Here is College Football Playoff Preseason Bracketology: November 16.

Note: This will be updated following each week of games during the season. During the season more notes about the notable wins, losses and schedule will be included for each team.

First Round Byes

1. Ohio State Buckeyes (10-0)*

Ohio State stayed undefeated with their win over UCLA. There is no reason for the CFP Committee to move them down at this point.

This week: vs. Rutgers Scarlet Knights (5-5)

2. Indiana Hoosiers (11-0)

Indiana struggled in the first half with Wisconsin, but pulled away in the second half. There is an argument for Texas A&M to be ranked higher, but the committee will likely keep the teams where they are at and let the games later on sort things out.

This week: BYE

3. Texas A&M Aggies (10-0)*

Texas A&M went down early and made a great second-half comeback to defeat South Carolina. The Aggies are likely staying in the third spot, as the win over South Carolina doesn’t boost the resume a ton.

This week: vs. Samford Bulldogs (1-10)

4. Georgia Bulldogs (9-1)

Georgia notched the win over Texas, which boosts their case to move up the rankings. Alabama losing to Oklahoma, cements them moving up into the top four this week.

This week: vs. Charlotte 49ers (1-9)

First Round Hosts

5. Texas Tech Red Raiders (10-1)*

Texas Tech dominated UCF to get to 10 wins and have virtually locked up a spot in the Big 12 Championship. They move up a spot due to Alabama losing and there is a path to them getting a top four seed by selection day.

This week: BYE

6. Ole Miss Rebels (10-1)

Ole Miss defeated Florida, which won’t boost their standing too much, but they do move up a spot with Alabama taking another loss.

This week: BYE

7. Oregon Ducks (9-1)

The Ducks had no issue defeating Minnesota on Friday night. They still lack a marquee win, but have done enough to be in a great position to make the CFP, although a first round bye is likely out of reach.

This week: vs. USC Trojans (8-2)

8. Oklahoma Sooners (8-2)

Oklahoma went on the road and upset Alabama. With the win, they go from a marginal CFP team to definitely in the field if the season ended today. They should be ranked ahead of Alabama because of the head to head result.

This week: vs. Missouri Tigers (7-3)

Last Four In

9. Alabama Crimson Tide (8-2)

Alabama has dropped two games now. One of those losses was to a good team in Oklahoma this week and the other was to a bad Florida State team. They move down behind Oklahoma because of the head-to-head result, but still have enough quality wins to think they will be in the CFP if they win out.

This week: Eastern Illinois Panthers (FCS 7-3)

10. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (10-2)

Notre Dame defeated a ranked Pitt team, but slide one spot down in the rankings because of Oklahoma jumping them. Notre Dame is currently in the CFP, but they will be right on the bubble unless they get some more help down the stretch.

This week: vs. Syracuse Orange (3-7)

11. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (9-1)*

Georgia Tech won a close one over Boston College. The close game might get committee members to think about things for an extra second, but the Yellow Jackets are still the highest-ranked ACC team who could make the championship game as things currently sit.

This week: vs. Pittsburgh Panthers (7-3)

12. James Madison Dukes (9-1)*

James Madison dominated Appalachian State this week to 9-1. Their lone loss of the season was to Louisville and with USF losing, the CFP committee could have them as the highest-ranked group of five team.

This week: vs. Washington State Cougars (4-5)

First Four Out

BYU Cougars (9-1)

BYU got back on the right track against TCU, winning 44-13. They will likely still be ranked in the top 12, but will be barely out of the CFP due to autobids.

This week: at Cincinnati Bearcats (7-3)

Utah Utes (8-2)

The Utes piled it on over Baylor, winning 55-28. The Utes were ranked 13th last week and will likely be right in the same range.

This week: vs. Kansas State (5-5)

Vanderbilt Commodores (8-2)

Vanderbilt didn’t play, but they remain in contention for the CFP.

This week: vs. Kentucky Wildcats (5-5)

Miami Hurricanes (8-2)

Miami is clinging to hope they can make the CFP as an auto-bid, as they are likely out of the ACC Championship Game.

This week: at Virginia Tech Hokies (3-7)

First Four Out- Group of Five Slot

Tulane Green Wave (American) (8-2)

Tulane defeated FAU this week, which keeps them in a four-way race of teams with one losses in the American Conference. They are likely going to be the highest-ranked team in the conference and will have a legitimate case to make the CFP if they win out.

This week: at Temple Owls (5-5)

North Texas Mean Green (American) (9-1)

North Texas is another one-loss American Conference team who stayed that way with the win over UAB.

This week: at Rice Owls (5-5)

Navy Midshipmen (American) (8-2)

The Midshipmen had a huge win over USF to stay in CFP contention and to knock USF out of it.

This week: BYE

San Diego State Aztecs (MWC) (8-2)

The Aztecs defeated Boise State to now sit atop the MWC. Their loss to Hawaii in their last game may have cost them a chance at the CFP, unless some real shakeups happen.

This week: vs. San Jose State Spartans (3-7)
