The college football season is approaching quickly. While there are coaches who have some stability, there are others with some pressure heading into the 2022 season. Here are the college football coaches on the hot seat for 2023.
College Football Coaches on the Hot Seat
ACC
Boston College: Jeff Haffley
Haffley had a decent start to his tenure at Boston College. He went 6-5 in 2020 and 6-6 in 2021. Last season did not go as planned though, as the Eagles went 3-9. Another bad season could make his seat pretty hot.
Big Ten
Indiana: Tom Allen
Allen started slowly, then picked it up and now has had two losing seasons in a row. At his peak, Indiana went 8-5 in 2019 and 6-2 in 2020. Since then, Allen is 6-18 over the last two seasons. Indiana is a tough job and he’s had some success, but another losing season may result in a change of the guard.
Michigan State: Mel Tucker
In his second season, Tucker looked like a genius when he helped the Spartans go 11-2. After a big contract extension, he went 5-7 last season. His seat definitely isn’t too hot yet, but it can’t make boosters too happy that a coach that ranks in the top 10 in salary went 5-7 last season.
Ohio State: Ryan Day
How good is the rivalry between Ohio State and Michigan? Day has a 45-6 record in his tenure. The problem is they have lost the last two games against Michigan. They still made the College Football Playoff last year, but a loss to Michigan this year could result in Day’s seat being on fire.
Big 12
West Virginia: Neal Brown
In four seasons at West Virginia, Brown has made two bowl games. He has a 22-25 record at the school. Things look like they aren’t improving heading into the 2023 season so Brown could end up getting fired at the end of the season.
Pac-12
California: Justin Wilcox
Wilcox went to two straight bowl games in 2018 and 2019, but has not found such success since. After going 1-3, 5-7 and then 4-8 over the last three seasons, he may need to make a bowl game to save his job in 2023.
SEC
Texas A&M: Jimbo Fisher
It is no secret that many Texas A&M boosters aren’t happy with Jimbo Fisher after he finished 5-7 last season. He still has a 39-21 record at the school, but they are expecting big things. The recruiting classes have been good, but now things have to turn around on the field.
Group of Five
Arkansas State: Butch Jones
After winning just five games in two seasons, Jones needs a fast turnaround.
New Mexico: Danny Gonzalez
Gonzalez has only won seven games in three seasons. He’ll have to push toward a bowl game this season.
Rice: Mike Bloomgren
Rice has a 16-39 record during Bloomgren’s tenure. They did make a bowl game last season, albeit with a 5-7 record.
ULM: Terry Bowden
Bowden has had two straight 4-8 seasons to start his time at ULM. He probably buys another year with a similar record, but that may be it.
