Each week, The Game Haus will highlight five players to watch from college football games featuring Associated Press Top 25 teams. From established stars to players on the verge of breaking out, we’ll offer some names to remember every week of the college football season.
Here’s a look at five players to watch in Week 7 (All times Eastern):
Brady White, QB, No. 23 Memphis
Matchup: at Temple, Noon, Saturday
Breakdown: Memphis has cracked the Top 25 thanks to the play of White, who is well deserving as one of the players to watch in Week 7. The Arizona State transfer is completing 71.7 percent of his passes for 1,163 yards with 11 touchdowns – including three in each of the last three games. White was just named a finalist for the Unitas Award. However, he should be in for a serious challenge against a stingy Temple defense on the road.
Devin Duvernay, WR, No. 11 Texas
Matchup: vs. No. 6 Oklahoma (at Dallas, Texas), Noon, Saturday
Breakdown: While Oklahoma’s talented receivers earn plenty of praise, let’s not forget about Duvernay. Certainly worthy of being one of our players to watch in Week 7, Duvernay enters this week’s action with a national-best 9.0 receptions per game. He’s also tied for second in the country with 45 receptions and among the top 25 with 463 yards. The Red River Showdown has provided some great individual efforts in recent years, and Duvernay is someone to keep an eye on.
Yetur Gross-Matos, DE, No. 10 Penn State
Matchup: at No. 17 Iowa, 7:30 p.m., Saturday
Breakdown: The junior defensive end has moved on and grown up from an offseason suspension to once again showcase himself as one of the most disruptive defenders in the nation. He ranks among the country’s leaders with 5 1/2 sacks and 7 1/2 tackles for loss. Last week, Michigan sacked Iowa quarterback Nate Stanley eight times, so Gross-Matos should be licking his chops for this matchup.
Justin Strnad, LB, No. 19 Wake Forest
Matchup: vs. Louisville, 7:30 p.m., Saturday
Breakdown: The Demon Deacons are 5-0 and have allowed fewer than 20 points in a game twice this season. The senior Strnad anchors that defense, leading the ACC at 10.6 tackles per game and sitting among the national leaders averaging 6.0 solo tackles.
Lamical Perine, RB, No. 7 Florida
Matchup: at No. 5 LSU, 8 p.m., Saturday
Breakdown: If Florida is to pull off the upset at LSU, it likely must find a way to churn out yards on the ground. One would assume Perine will be the focal point of trying to do that. He finally reached the 100-yard rushing mark against Auburn, but most of it came on his huge 88-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. He’s totaled 193 yards with four TDs on 36 carries in three career games against the Tigers.
