College football is now in full swing. There are always things to watch every week of the season. Here are 5 things to watch in college football week 6.
1. Red River Rivalry
The last Big 12 matchup between Texas and Oklahoma will be this week. Texas has earned headlines early in the season for their defeats of Alabama and Kansas. They have scored 36 points per game and their defense has been able to hold up too. A win in this game would give them even more of a step ahead in the Big 12 race.
Oklahoma has started the season at 5-0. They don’t have the best wins yet, but have played well. Their offense has proven to be high-powered, as they average 47.4 points per game. Brent Venables also has the defense playing at a great level, as they are allowing just 10.4 points per game. It would be an upset if the Sooners win, but the rivalry often provides different results.
2. Kentucky’s Upset Bid/Georgia’s First Big Test
Kentucky has opened up the season 5-0 and are now ranked. While they didn’t have many impressive wins in the first four games, they did beat a ranked Florida team in week 5. They did so in a dominating fashion, which now gives them a chance to take on the projected best team in the SEC East, Georgia.
The Bulldogs are also 5-0, but have not played any big games. They did struggle against Auburn in week 5, which makes them look a lot more vulnerable. Kentucky will be their first game against a ranked team and have showed they can be physical. Georgia’s defense may need to help lead them to a win while their offense continues to figure things out.
3. Notre Dame at Louisville
Notre Dame lost to Ohio State, then rebounded to beat Duke on the road. It looks like they will have another tough game as they go on the road to take on the undefeated Louisville Cardinals. Sam Hartman has brought balance to the offense by having a passing game. It has really opened things up, but Notre Dame’s defense also deserves some credit, as they have allowed 15.5 points per game over their last two contests.
It will be a tough road game against Jeff Brohm‘s Louisville squad. The Cardinals have defeated four power five teams this season and are averaging 37 points per game. Jack Plummer has operated the offense solidly with 1,406 passing yards. He’ll have to play even better to give the Cardinals a chance to win at home.
4. Alabama at Texas A&M
No matter what the records are the last few seasons, Alabama has struggled with Texas A&M. Things could get dicey this season as well. The Crimson Tide haven’t had great quarterback play this year and their offensive line also hasn’t been great. They have a loss, which came to Texas, but they have seemingly started to get their footing going in the right direction.
Texas A&M had a rough season last year and are mainly trying to revamp the offense this year. They are scoring 38.6 points per game. The Aggies lost to Miami this season, but otherwise are unblemished. That new offense will be put to the test against Alabama. Texas A&M will be starting backup quarterback Max Johnson in place of injured starter Conner Weigman, which will make things tougher for them.
5. Fresno State at Wyoming
A matchup of two teams who could be the group of five representative in the New Year’s Six Bowl Games could be happening this weekend. Fresno State has defeated two Power Five teams on the road this season. Mikey Keene has led a pass-heavy offensive attack that averages 304.8 yards per game. Their defense gives up just 17 points per game, which is impressive considering how they’ve tested themselves with their scheduling.
Wyoming has just one loss on the season, which came at the hands of Texas. They have impressive wins over Texas Tech and Appalachian State. Craig Bohl has done a tremendous job of getting the teams wins without the best passing attack. They average just 142.2 yards through the air, but their running game and defense help make up for it. They are hosting Fresno State and are underdogs, but could pull off a huge upset with big implications.
