College football is back in full swing. There are always things to watch every week of the season. Here are 5 things to watch in college football week 5.
Penn State is undefeated, but also untested this season. That will change this week when they host undefeated Oregon in their White Out Game. The Nittany Lions are coming off a bye week, which could help them in this game. Quarterback Drew Allar hasn’t played up to his potential with just 626 passing yards and four touchdowns. The defense has looked great, giving up just 17 points in three games so far.
Oregon also hasn’t had a tough schedule so far. They have rolled through the competition and have looked like one of the best teams in the country. Dante Moore has looked revitalized at quarterback, passing for 962 yards and 11 touchdowns. The defense is allowing less than 10 points per game. It should be a good game in Happy Valley with two of the top teams in the country going at it. The winner could have a leg up on making the Big Ten Championship Game after the two teams met there last season.
Alabama lost to Florida State in week 1, but has since looked a lot better. They now get to travel to Georgia in a game that will reveal if they have improved. Ty Simpson has looked great at quarterback with 862 passing yards and nine touchdowns on the season, but this defense will be tougher. Alabama has allowed just 14 points in the two games since their matchup against Georgia. They need both sides of the ball to step up in this one.
Georgia wasn’t playing up to their potential in the first couple of seasons in the country, but proved themselves last week in a win over Tennessee. Their offense really clicked, as they scored 44 points. Gunner Stockton has taken a step forward, passing for 721 yards and four touchdowns. The defense showed some vulnerability against Tennessee and needs to clean things up before this game. Both teams were on a bye before this game, so coaching will have a big impact in a game that could set the loser back in the SEC.
LSU and Ole Miss has had some classics over the years and having both teams undefeated for this one just adds to the hype. The Tigers have sported a better defense so far this season, but the offense has failed to live up to the hype so far. They have wins over Florida and Clemson, but those are questionable after those teams have struggled. If the offense gets going, the Tigers can be a dangerous team.
Ole Miss has found lightning in a bottle with backup quarterback Trinidad Chambliss, who has passed for 719 yards, rushed for 195 yards and accounted for six total touchdowns. While Austin Simmons could come back soon, the offense might run better with Chambliss at the helm. Ole Miss has had some defensive issues that could be exploited this week. It could be another great game between these two teams with plenty of stakes at play in the SEC.
Washington may not have received a lot of national attention, but they are undefeated at 3-0. They have not played the best competition, but they have looked great. Quarterback Demond Williams, running back Jonah Coleman and wide receiver Denzel Boston create a big three on offense that has helped the Huskies score 55.7 points per game. The defense has not played as cleanly, as they allow 18.3 points per game, but they have played well enough to give the Huskies some wins. Now, they will be tested.
Ohio State travels to Seattle to take on the Huskies. The Buckeyes are coming off a bye week and should be ready for the travel to the west coast. They defeated Texas in one of the best wins of the season so far and look the part of a national contender. New starting quarterback Julian Sayin has passed for 779 yards and eight touchdowns, showing a good connection with Jeremiah Smith, who has 315 yards and three touchdowns. The defense has allowed just 16 points in three games this season, making them one of the best in the country. Ohio State should win the game, but they will have a challenge.
USC has flown under the radar, but have played well to start the season at 4-0. Quarterback Jayden Maiava has done well to pass for 989 yards and six touchdowns. He has led the offense to scoring 52.5 points per game. The defense has been shaky, as they have given up 20.3 points per game. The Trojans could really cement their status with a win at Illinois this week.
Illinois is coming off a week in which they got destroyed by Indiana. They returned a lot of starters from a good team last season, but for this season, they need to rebound quickly. The offensive line struggled against Indiana and needs to fix things to help the offense against USC. While the defense has talent, it is hard to get a read on them after being thrashed so much. Illinois has their backs against the wall and USC has a lot to prove still.
