College football is back in full swing. There are always things to watch every week of the season. Here are 5 things to watch in college football week 14.
The biggest rivalry in the sport happens this week. Ohio State is undefeated, but has lost four straight to their rivals, Michigan. The Buckeyes score 37.5 points and allow just 7.5 points per game, showing great units on both sides of the ball. Julian Sayin has played efficient football and he’ll hope to have top receivers Carnell Tate and Jeremiah Smith back for this game. Arvell Reese has been all over the field for the defense, leading a team full of stars.
Michigan has just two losses and are still alive for the CFP. The Wolverines have won five straight games, even if it isn’t always pretty. They average 27.7 points per game and allow 17.7 points per game. Freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood has had an up and down season, but they have more passing potential than they had last season when they beat the Buckeyes. Andrew Marsh emerging at wide receiver could help Michigan have a shot in this game again.
Alabama was in a great spot for the CFP a few weeks ago. They then lost to Oklahoma and now the Iron Bowl has added importance. The Crimson Tide have a good passing attack to cover up for a bad running game. They have a solid offense that averages 31.6 points per game. Defensively, they give up 17.8 points per game. Alabama should win this game, but they have lost a few that they were projected to win over the last two years.
Auburn is 5-6 and fired head coach Hugh Freeze. They are coming off a win over Mercer, which won’t do much, but does put them in position to be bowl-eligible if they beat Alabama. Freshman quarterback Deuce Knight looked good in his first career start, going 15/20 passing for 239 yards and two touchdowns. They’ll need him to be great to elevate an offense that scores just 23.9 points per game. The defense has been better, allowing just 20.4 points per game, which could help them pull off the upset.
Vanderbilt has a chance to make the CFP, even if it is slim. They’ll need to beat Tennessee for the first time since 2018. The Commodores have been led by the electric Diego Pavia, who has passed for 2,440 yards and 21 touchdowns. They score 38.3 points per game, making them a top 10 unit. The defense allows 22.2 points per game, which is average. Can the Commodores win and get some help to make the CFP?
Tennessee is out of the CFP race with three losses, as there are too many teams for them to jump, even if they do win this week. They still won’t want their rivals to make the CFP. Josh Heupel’s offense is elite again, as they put up 43.4 points per game. The defense has talent, but they allow 28.9 points per game. They will be locked in and have the game at home, so they could ruin Vanderbilt’s chances altogether.
Texas A&M has a CFP spot locked up, but they have a rivalry game that they will want to win against Texas to keep them out of any CFP discussions. The Aggies have a balanced offense that ranks in the top 30 for both rushing and passing. They average 37.1 points per game. The defense allows 23.2 points per game, with some ups and downs on the season.
Texas has three losses, but a win in this game could vault them into the CFP talk again. Arch Manning had his best performance of the season, as he accounted for six touchdowns against Arkansas in week 13. The Longhorns can’t run the ball well, but they average 29.8 points per game, ranking 5oth in the country. They allow 20.0 points per game. Texas will be hyped for this game at home and they could ruin the Texas A&M perfect season, while helping themself.
The rumors surrounding Lane Kiffin are swirling. Will he coach at Ole Miss next season or elsewhere? After it was initially reported that Kiffin had an ultimatum of this week to tell the Ole Miss administration his future plans, Kiffin refuted that. With the Egg Bowl on Friday, Kiffin and Ole Miss will discuss his future plans on Saturday.
There is a lot of football to watch, but the coaching carousel is already going. James Franklin signed as Virginia Tech’s head coach. Kiffin’s decision will have an even bigger ripple effect. If he takes either the LSU or Ole Miss job, there will be plenty of more coaching movement. If he stays, the coaching carousel will still be great, but he will have a chance to coach Ole Miss in the CFP, if they don’t get distracted this week and defeat Mississippi State.
