College football is back in full swing. There are always things to watch every week of the season. Here are 5 things to watch in college football week 10.
Vanderbilt got a tough win over Missouri in week 9 and now has a tough test on the road at Texas. The Commodores have scored a lot of points this season at 38.4 points per game with Diego Pavia really stepping up his games this season. They run the ball well and the defense has also been solid, only allowing 18.8 points per game. It is a big game for Vanderbilt, as if they win, they will likely just need to go 2-1 the rest of the way to make the CFP.
Texas still just has two losses, even if it feels like it is more. They are coming off a game in which they made a great comeback on the road against Mississippi State. Both the offense and defense have been inconsistent this season. Texas is still alive in the CFP race, even if it looks like it won’t happen. If they can get things on the right track in this game, it sets up a few big games down the stretch.
Oklahoma and Tennessee are in a virtual elimination game this weekend. The Sooners are 6-2 after dropping a game to Ole Miss. They also lost to Texas, but have some solid wins. The door is open for them to possibly make the CFP as a three-loss team, but that is hoping for some other results to go their way. The Sooners’ defense didn’t play great against Ole Miss, but have been great the rest of the season. They’ll need to be good against a good Tennessee offense.
Tennessee also has two losses, which were to Georgia and Alabama. The Volunteers score 45.6 points per game with the third-best passing offense in the country. Their defense has been a problem, as they have given up 30.9 points per game. A win in this game, sets them up well for the rest of the season, but this won’t be easy.
Cincinnati and Utah are matching up in a huge Big 12 battle this weekend that could decide who is in the conference championship game. The Bearcats have had a good season, losing just their season-opening game to Nebraska before reeling off seven-straight wins. Brendan Sorsby should be in Heisman Trophy consideration with a 20-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio this season. Their offense scores 38.3 points per game, showing real potential, while their defense has been solid as well, only giving up 19 points per game.
Utah has two losses overall this season (to Texas Tech and Arizona State), but both were in conference, so a win here and some help along the way could land them in the Big 12 Championship Game. The offense ranks 11th in points per game, while the defense ranks ninth, but the offense has struggled in their losses. They will need to play well to defeat Cincinnati and set up some chaos in the Big 12 standings.
The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party is this weekend and it features a team on a CFP path and one with an interim coach. Georgia is 6-1 and the Bulldogs are coming off a bye. Their offense has been great this season, with Gunner Stockton helping the team move the ball through the air more. The defense only allows 19.6 points per game, but they have had some struggles that past Georgia squads haven’t had. They should be favored in this game, but anything can happen in a rivalry, especially after a coaching change.
Billy Gonzales is the interim head coach for Florida in this game after Billy Napier was fired after their last game. The offense hasn’t played well, despite the talent on the roster, as they average just 22.4 points per game. That has put a lot of pressure on the defense, who has still played decently well, giving up 20 points per game. The coaching change could help and they have the talent to at least play Georgia close in this rivalry.
The American Conference has five teams with one or two losses that could make the championship game. Two are squaring off this week between Navy and North Texas. The Midshipmen are undefeated on the year, relying on their top-ranked rushing offense at 318.1 yards per game to score 37.3 points per game. Their defense gives up 23 points per game, but has been struggling as of late.
North Texas has just one loss this season, which was to USF a few weeks ago. They are very much alive in the American Conference race, as they are fueled by their great offense. They score 46.1 points per game, which is the best in the country. Drew Mestemaker has led a great passing attack that puts up 317.6 yards per game. The defense allows 25 points per game. They will have their hands full with Navy, but it should be a good battle to help bring some more clarity to the conference standings.
